Apathukatha Sivathanu Pillai, is a Distinguished Scientist, the Chief Controller R & D, DRDO, and CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace- the highly acclaimed Indo-Russian Joint Venture for the design, development, production and marketing of BRAHMOS, the world leader in cruise missile technology. Dr. Pillai began his career in 1969, with systems engineering and systems management of launch vehicles at ISRO. He assisted Dr. Vikram Sarabhai in the evolution of the ten-year space profile, and was a core member of the SLV-3 team headed by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Pillai also worked with Prof. Satish Dhawan in the study of future ISRO launch vehicles and missions. Dr. Pillai joined DRDO in 1986 in the integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) at Hyderabad, under the leadership of Dr. Kalam. He was the Programme Director, IGMDP, and Associate Director, DRDL, Hyderabad. His most important contribution has been the development of critical technologies using a network of academic institutions, R&D laboratories, and industries through an innovative consortium approach and technology empowerment. His decades of dedicated efforts and contributions have helped India realize the concurrent development of Agni, Prithvi, Nag, Trishul, and Akash missiles under IGMDP. Dr. Pillai is the author of many technical papers, and co-author of the book Envisioning an Empowered Nation with Dr. Kalam. A Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering , and a member of many other professional bodies. Dr. Pillai was awarded the Padma Shri in 2002 by the Government of India.
