Robert M. Bone effectively weaves the historic, geographic, economic, political, environmental, and social dimensions of the North to provide students with the most up-to-date research and developments. Since the previous edition, interest in the opening of the Northwest Passage, access to the wealth of natural resources contained in the region, and increased signs of climate change have become major topics of discussion, both in Parliament and on the world stage. A new chapter examines the geopolitical forces that are each vying for their respective piece of the pie, and the new challenges faced by Northern communities as their once remote home becomes increasingly more accessible. Further, Bone has expanded the discussion on the effects of global warming on the environment and the consequences of climate change on Inuit way of life.

Robert M. Bone is professor emeritus in the Department of Geography at the University of Saskatchewan. An expert on the Arctic and the Canadian North, Bone has published two successful books with OUP Canada: The Canadian North: Issues and Challenges, which is now entering its fourth edition, and Regional Geography of Canada, which was recently published in its fifth edition.
