Arthur Quiller-Couch, born on November 21, 1863, in Bodmin, Cornwall, was a prolific British writer, poet, and literary critic, known for his significant contributions to English literature and criticism. Often writing under the pseudonym 'Q', Quiller-Couch was educated at Clifton College, Oxford University and later became a lecturer at Cambridge. His scholarly pursuits culminated in his anthology series 'The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250–1900' and a subsequent series of lectures published as 'On the Art of Writing' (1916). He was known for his emphasis on the importance of writing with clarity and simplicity, and his critique often focused on the usage of English rather than on the substance of the work. His literary style blended a romantic revival of past traditions with the innovative sensibilities of his time. Quiller-Couch's profound influence extended beyond his written work to his mentorship of future literary figures while serving as the King Edward VII Professor of English Literature at Cambridge from 1912 to 1944. His other notable works include 'The Splendid Spur' (1889) and 'The Oxford Book of Ballads' (1910). Quiller-Couch's legacy as an educator, editor, and writer remains marked by his dedication to the craft of writing and his belief in the timeless value of literary art. He passed away on May 12, 1944, but his teachings and writings continue to inspire students and literary enthusiasts alike.
