Chapter 1

CHANGE

BE THE CHANGE

“Be the change you want to see in the world.”

—Mahatma Gandhi

Change is a constant, and it appears in many forms. Sometimes change comes suddenly and unexpectedly. At other times it is self-initiated—a change we desire to realize but may feel is so out of reach that it’s a fantasy.

No matter the type of change you may be facing or exploring, the question is, how can you “be the change you want to see”? How can you turn Mahatma Gandhi’s insight into powerful action in your own life?

You have the power to shape your own experience, no matter the circumstances, and take control of your own life. Here are some ways in which you can BE THE CHANGE you wish to see in your life:

  • HAVE FAITH. When something has changed in your world and you are fearful about how it will all turn out, know that God is with you. Affirm: God is here, and all is well.
  • CENTER YOURSELF in the spirit of God within you when facing change of any kind. Make a divine connection in the silence and experience God’s presence within, guiding you to reach your own fulfillment and perfection.
  • BE OPEN TO THE GOOD. Do not project fearful predictions or worst-case scenarios onto the situation at hand, but be open to God’s good. Knowing that all is well, you position yourself to be open to receive what is next and best for you.
  • SEE AND FEEL THE CHANGE. When initiating a change in your lifestyle, see and feel the change taking shape even before you take your first step into the unknown. If you desire to live healthier or enjoy a more fulfilling career, visualize yourself healthy and fulfilled, right now, exactly as you are. The specific decisions and strategies to bring about improvement will come to you with ease as you fully embrace the change you wish to see.
  • LET GO AND LET GOD. At any given point when things are changing in your life, you may not have all the details at hand. Release the details to God. There are untold avenues available for everything you need and desire to find its way to you, and all will become clear in time. Be okay in the unknown for now. Know that God is in charge.
  • SEARCH YOUR HEART. You may desire to see a change in the world—perhaps it’s peace or an end to the pain of poverty or cruelty. But what is your role in effecting this kind of change? As you pray for change in the world at large, clear your heart of any anger or ill will toward others, even in their smallest sense. Love your neighbors, even when they disturb you. Pray for others, and know the best for everyone. Check your heart for judgment or unforgiveness. For each activity of love that replaces one of fear or anger, the world more fully realizes the peace of God.

Day 1

BEGIN AGAIN

New pathways stretch before me.

Can a person begin again, no matter what? The answer is a resounding “Yes!” But how do I begin again? Where do I start? The key is in the word begin. This is what is needed—a beginning, right where I find myself, with the situations I am meeting, in the kind of life I am living. I can begin again, but taking that first step is up to me.

The first words in the Bible are “In the beginning God.” This is a good way to begin my new book of life, my new look at life. In the beginning God. So the beginning of any change in me, in my way of life, in my thoughts and attitudes, is to go to God, the loving presence within me, in stillness, in openness of mind and heart, in receptivity of spirit.

God is with me; God is the power in me to do and to be. I rise up out of old limitations; I begin again.

“In the beginning God.”

—Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

Day 2

LIFE IS CHANGE

I affirm the constancy of God.

One word that might best describe life is change. There are changing patterns in everything from work to leisure. There are advancements in technology that make life seem more comfortable, yet more complex.

If I feel intimidated by twists or turns in my life, I remind myself that God is constant in a changing world. Again and again, I affirm the truth of God’s abiding presence in my life.

Regardless of appearances, God works through every person and through every situation to bring about good. Change cannot thwart God’s will of good for me.

Yes, every situation that comes into my life can be a stepping-stone to greater good. My positive thoughts help me to recognize and accept the good. By affirming the constancy of God, I meet change with poise.

“The human mind may devise many plans,

but it is the purpose of the Lord that will

be established.”

–Proverbs 19:21

Day 3

NEW LIFE

The abundant life of God is energizing and sustaining me.

Wherever I look, I see new life. I am also aware that transformation is taking place, though the magnitude of it might not seem evident. For instance, I may observe the simple shape of a tadpole in a pond. I understand, however, that the tadpole has within it the potential to grow and transform its shape and form so that it expresses life in greater ways.

I, too, have the potential to transform myself, giving greater expression to life. I bring the realization of this truth to a time of prayer. Relaxed, I take smooth, effortless breaths, releasing any concerns about recent days or coming weeks. Each breath reminds me that I am one with God and with all creation. I am an expression of God’s abundant life.

“When a woman is in labor, she has pain,

because her hour has come. But when her child

is born, she no longer remembers the anguish

because of the joy of having brought a human

being into the world.”

–John 16:21

Day 4

DETOUR

I am always in the presence of God and discovering new blessings every day.

Detours are as much a part of my journey in life as the direct routes. Yet it is during the roundabouts that I receive unexpected blessings.

Making alterations in my plans, I discover that God provides me with many roads to my good.

A change of jobs or careers may lead me to much more rewarding ways to spend my time and increase my income.

A temporary rest is an opportunity to become spiritually centered, to be renewed and refreshed by God’s spirit.

Where am I on my journey today? I am always in the presence of God, discovering that the detour I am on is leading me to new and brighter horizons.

“The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud

by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar

of fire by night, to give them light, so that they

might travel by day and by night.”

–Exodus 13:21

Day 5

RESILIENT

Through the presence of Spirit within, I am resilient!

No matter how challenging or disturbing outer circumstances may appear, the spirit of God within comforts and renews me.

Spirit’s presence enables me to make needed adjustments and bounce back from disappointment or difficulty with renewed vigor. Through all experiences and situations, I am one with Spirit.

In times of challenge or change, I am resilient. If I am searching for right employment, moving to a new home, or making any other major shift in my life, I remain adaptable and buoyant.

Spirit within is my constant source of strength, prosperity, illumination, and love. Spirit within renews my liveliness. Spirit within is my stability and my comfort.

“We look not at what can be seen but at

what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is

temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.”

–2 Corinthians 4:18

Day 6

GOOD

All things are working together for my good.

To remember that “all things work together for good” is to take a larger view of life, to see myself and my circumstances in a new light—the light of understanding. I am a student in the school of life, and all my experiences are for good. Each one helps, teaches, and guides me as I look for and evoke the good that is within it.

God loves me with an everlasting love. I place myself and my life in God’s care. I have faith in God, and I know that even when I cannot see it from my human viewpoint, there is good in everything that comes to me, everything that takes place in my life.

If an unexpected turn of events takes place, I give thanks that God is with me wherever I am, whatever I do, and that every new circumstance, every turn in the road of my life, holds the promise of good for me.

“We know that all things work together for good

for those who love God,

who are called according to his purpose.”

–Romans 8:28
