He has won numerous prestigious awards including the Scientific Prize of Smith Kline Beecham and the Pettenkofer Prize. Paul van Helden is Professor of Medical Biochemistry at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He is Director of Laboratory Research for the Desmond Tutu TB Centre. He is a past president of the SA Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and has received the Gold medal of this society.
