She created an innovation program for distributive education covering rural and urban geographic areas by using technology to increase access. She conducts research related to the clinical nurse specialist role and practice. Dr. Fulton has contributed many publications and presentations influencing CNS curricula and CNS practice competencies and participated in developing national practice competencies and educational guidelines. She has edited and authored books, book chapters and peer reviewed articles promoting scholarly dialogue about CNS education and practice. Two of Dr Fulton's edited books received the prestigious American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year award in the advanced practice nursing category. A recognized leader in advanced nursing education and practice, she served as a consultant for education nationally and internationally. For 15 years, she has served as the editor-in-chief of Clinical Nurse Specialist: The International Journal for Advanced Nursing Practice, the official journal of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS).
