This brief provides an insight into the present scenario of the role of nanotechnology in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer at an early stage. Currently, lung cancer is the subject of major concern owing to the very high mortality rate throughout the world. Most of the conventional treatment methods such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc., fail to prolong life of the patients. Incidents of recurrence are also very common in case of lung cancer. Researchers have shown that nanoparticles may act as a powerful anti cancer tool, especially for lung cancer. Unique surface properties and easy surface functionalization of nanoparticles enable early detection, diagnosis, imaging and treatment of lung cancer. The authors have elaborately presented how various nanoparticles (natural, semi synthetic and synthetic) may help in the treatment of lung cancer. They have also detailed works of various scientists who succeeded in developing effective nanoparticles and enabled very specific lung cancer therapy without any undesirable side effects and minimized death.

Dr. Bandyopadhyay is M.Tech and Ph. D. in Polymer Science & Technology and is presently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Polymer Science & Technology, University of Calcutta and Technical Director in the Board of Directors of the upcoming South Asian Rubber & Polymers Park in West Bengal, India. He is former Assistant Professor of Rubber Technology Centre at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has more than 8 years of Teaching & Research Experience and has published more than 60 research papers in high impact international journals, four Book Chapters and received one Indian Patent. He has guided two Ph.Ds and presently 8 students are working under his supervision. He has received awards like Young Scientist Award from Materials Research Society of India, Calcutta Chapter, Young Scientist Award from Department of Science & Technology, Government of India and Career Award for Young Teachers from All India Council for Technical Education, Government of India. He has delivered many Invited Lectures in International Conferences both in India and abroad. He is the life member of Society for Polymer Science, India and the Fellow member of International Congress for Environmental Research.

Ms Tamalika Das was born in Kolkata in the year 1986. She was educated at St. Xavier's Institution (Kolkata) and graduated (2008) in Chemistry (Hons) from Scottish Church College (Kolkata). She completed post BSc. B. Tech (2011) and M.Tech (2013) from University of Calcutta in the department of Polymer Science and Technology. She earned gold medal twice from University of Calcutta (both in B.Tech and M.Tech). She did her M.Tech project from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (Kolkata). Currently she is pursuing doctoral research in the Department of Polymer Science & Technology at University of Calcutta. Her area of interest is hyperbranched polymers. She has published one paper in high impact international journal so far. She enjoys INSPIRE Fellowship from Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.

Ms. Sabina Yeasmin was born in 1986 in a small village in Burdwan, West Bengal, India. She got her education from Kalna Hindu Girls High School. She received Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Maulana Azad College (Kolkata) and Masters of Science in Biochemistry from West Bengal State University (Kolkata). She stood first in the Post Graduate Examination and received INSPIRE fellowship from Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. Presently Ms. Yeasmin is pursuing her doctoral degree in the Department of Polymer Science & Technology of University of Calcutta in the area of synthesis, characterization and biomedical applications of silver nanoparticles.
