The Carbs & Cals & Fat & Fiber Counter is a visual guide to carbohydrate, protein, fat, and fiber counting for diet, weight loss, portion control, and diabetes management. It contains over 1,800 photos of popular USA food and drink items, with the carbohydrate, calorie, fat, and fiber values clearly displayed above each photo. The 11-page introduction to the book contains information about carbohydrates, nutrients, diabetes and carbohydrate counting, fiber and carbohydrate counting, calories, fat, and how to use the book. The 310 pages of photographs are arranged into 19 color-coded sections: Beverages; Bread; Breakfast; Cakes & Pastries; Candy; Cookies, Crackers & Snacks; Desserts; Eggs & Cheese; Fast Food; Fruit; Ice Cream & Yogurt; International; Meals; Meat, Chicken & Fish; Milk & Cream; Potatoes; Rice, Pasta & Grains; Spreads, Sauces & Dips; Vegetables & Beans. There are up to 6 different portion photos for each food, with their corresponding carbohydrate, calorie, fat, and fiber values displayed above each photo. This provides users with an easy comparison to the food on their plate and a helpful guide to the carbohydrate, calories, fat, and fiber they are consuming.
The prepared/cooked weight is also shown below each photo. Carbohydrate and calorie counting, and monitoring of fat and fiber intake are an important part of diet and diabetes management, and this book is an invaluable support tool for anyone engaged in this process. It takes out the guesswork and time spent weighing food by showing the calorie and nutrient content in each food photo. This allows the user to make choices on how to reduce calories and fat intake by choosing a smaller portion or swapping a food item that is high in calories for a healthier option.

Chris Cheyette is a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian with the NHS, working with people with Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes.
