Pervasive Computing
Academic Press Inc (Verlag)

Using numerous illustrative examples and following both theoretical and practical results the authors discuss: a coherent and realistic image of today’s architectures, techniques, protocols, components, orchestration, choreography, and developments related to pervasive computing components for intelligently collecting data, resource, and data management issues; the importance of data security and privacy in the era of big data; the benefits of pervasive computing and the development process for scientific and commercial applications and platforms to support them in this field.
Pervasive computing has developed technology that allows sensing, computing, and wireless communication to be embedded in everyday objects, from cell phones to running shoes, enabling a range of context-aware applications. Pervasive computing is supported by technology able to acquire and make use of the ubiquitous data sensed or produced by many sensors blended into our environment, designed to make available a wide range of new context-aware applications and systems. While such applications and systems are useful, the time has come to develop the next generation of pervasive computing systems. Future systems will be data oriented and need to support quality data, in terms of accuracy, latency and availability.
Pervasive Computing is intended as a platform for the dissemination of research efforts and presentation of advances in the pervasive computing area, and constitutes a flagship driver towards presenting and supporting advanced research in this area.

Ciprian Dobre received his PhD in Computer Science in 2008 from the Computer Science Department at the University Politehnica of Bucharest (UPB), Romania. Currently, he holds a permanent position of Associate Professor at UPB, where he teaches classes on Parallel and Distributed Algorithms, Cloud Computing, and others. Ciprian Dobre has early scientific and scholarly contributions in the field of large scale distributed systems concerning mobile applications and smart technologies to reduce urban congestion and air pollution (coordinator of projects MobiWay and TranSys), and context-aware applications (coordinator of CAPIM, projects SPRINT, ONSIDE, HYCCUPS and others), monitoring (project MonALISA), high-speed networking (projects VINCI and FDT), evaluation using modeling and simulation (developer of MONARC 2, coordinator of projects VNSim and Sim2Car), Such contributions led to results beyond the state of the art. Ciprian Dobre was awarded a PhD scholarship from California Institute of Technology (Caltech, USA), and another one from Oracle. His results received one IBM Faculty Award, two CENIC Awards, and three Best Paper Awards. Dr. Dobre has widely published in peer reviewed international journals, conferences/workshops, book chapters and edited books and proceedings in the field: over 100 books, chapters in edited books, articles in major international peer-reviewed journal and in well-established international conferences and workshops. Currently he is local project coordinator for national projects ‘CAPIM - Context-Aware Platform using Integrated Mobile Services’, and ‘MobiWay – Mobility beyond Individualism’. Ciprian Dobre’s research interests involve research subjects related to mobile wireless networks and computing applications, pervasive services, context-awareness, and people-centric or participatory sensing. He has held various tenured and visiting professorship positions. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey, UK (2019/2020), Visiting Professor at the Birkbeck College, University of London, UK (2009/2010) and a Research Associate at Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA (2004/2005). He was a Distinguished Guest Professor at Hubei University of Technology, China, for the duration of three years (2016-2019). Prof. Xhafa has widely published in peer reviewed international journals, conferences/workshops, book chapters, edited books and proceedings in the field (H-index 55). He has been awarded teaching and research merits by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education, by IEEE conferences and best paper awards. Prof. Xhafa has an extensive editorial service. He is founder and Editor-In-Chief of Internet of Things - Journal - Elsevier (Scopus and Clarivate WoS Science Citation Index) and of International Journal of Grid and Utility Computing, (Emerging Sources Citation Index), and AE/EB Member of several indexed Int'l Journals. Prof. Xhafa is a member of IEEE Communications Society, IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society and Founder Member of Emerging Technical Subcommittee of Internet of Things. His research interests include IoT and Cloud-to-thing continuum computing, massive data processing and collective intelligence, optimization, security and trustworthy computing and machine learning, among others.
