Chapter 5

August 29th, 12:30 P.M, 2023, 12:16 P.M – Istanbul, Turkey

Deep in the throng of the masses, Lennox Gold, a young American archeologist, maneuvered her way, weaving in and out of the bustling flea market of Istanbul. Her light green eyes darted left and right in her freckled face. Every now and then, she glanced over her shoulder, looking out for a fellow she needed to avoid because she owed him money. Making a right on a narrow alleyway, she smelled vanilla and wood incense from a meat market vendor twenty feet away. She brushed her light brown hair away from her forehead and breathed in the familiar smell that signaled relief. She had become accustomed to the smell on her wayward path of destruction, a path she never thought she would go down but nonetheless found herself.

Passing the meat vendor, Lennox headed towards an elderly blind woman begging for money. Lennox bent down to kiss the old woman’s head, dropped a few lira notes in her woven coin purse, and sat beside her. Lennox found it astounding that her friend could knit even though she was blind in both eyes. She had made Lennox a woven beanie to wear in winter. The blind woman smiled and grabbed her hand to kiss it.

“Is that you, Lennox?” The blind woman asked peacefully.

“The one and only,” Lennox denoted with a smirk.

They had had the same routine for four months straight now. Three days a week, Lennox would meet the woman in the alleyway, kiss her on top of her head, drop some lira in her woven coin purse, and sit down next to her; and each time, the woman would ask if she was Lennox and kiss her hand once, Lennox answered yes. The routine never changed, nor would anyone else kiss the woman on top of her head like she did, which made it even funnier to Lennox; it made her laugh during this period of her dark night of the soul.

When first getting to know the blind woman, Lennox would ask her about her life growing up in Turkey, savory foods to try, and places where the locals congregated. After coming to see her a few times a week, putting change in her purse, and giving her food to eat, six weeks later, the blind woman started to tell her grandiose stories about her life. Stories of how she grew up poor on a farm but was whisked away by a sultan of many riches. The sultan declared his love for her in front of the kingdom: she was the most beautiful woman in all the land. And she was still beautiful, even with two blind eyes, and nearly seventy years old. The blind woman had a youthfulness and glow about her that Lennox couldn’t explain.

They had a lavish wedding ten days later, and she moved into his exuberant palace where every want and need was met even before she asked. After bearing him two daughters but no sons in six years, in a fit of rage, the sultan blinded both of her eyes with hot coals and exiled her outside the palace to beg for the rest of her life. Her baby daughters were slain, one torn limb to limb, and the other was thrown into a fire pit and burned alive. The sultan remarried a princess who bore him three sons and a daughter. Lennox thought the blind woman was a master storyteller….or, she was just starting to lose her marbles.

Only three weeks ago, the woman mentioned that her ex-husband, the sultan, used to take her to a secret room filled with ancient scrolls and gospels beneath the mosque of Hagia Sophia. Lennox’s ears pricked up. The woman didn’t tell her anything more about the scrolls beneath Hagia Sophia. Still, she did tell her about another lost gospel in a ruin outside the city in a heavily forested area.

Lennox had heard rumors here and there of lost gospels, but nothing like this one, a gospel written by the divine feminine part of God, that was written by all female disciples. She knew this revelation would change mankind’s history forever. Now, whether it would be for good or for worse, she didn’t know, but she kept coming back to the blind woman hoping to find out more information. And to be honest, Lennox loved talking to her; there was something about her presence that soothed her soul. Maybe it was because the blind woman helped keep her grounded when all she wanted to do was wallow in her self-pity, misery, and pain.

“My sweet girl, have you found what you were looking for? It’s been a month, and this old woman wants to know if you have found the mysteries you seek.”

A wave of pain washed over Lennox’s body. Her legs ached, and she started feeling nauseous. Closing her eyes, she tried to focus on anything but the withdrawals. Lennox thought of Jax’s bright smile, how his warm brown eyes crinkled beneath his tortoise-shell glasses, and how he could make her laugh with her whole body. Lennox thought Jax was out of her league with his intelligence, tall and wiry good-looks, and easy-going, confident manner, not to mention his adorable British accent. He was the dig director of their excavation site, so she acted like one of the guys around him. She had put herself out there too many times and had been rejected too many times to count. She wasn’t about to do that again to herself, especially when she and Jax had a good thing going with work. If that meant only having Jax as a kind and funny friend for the rest of her life, that was something she could accept.

She repositioned her body and cracked her neck, opening her eyes to see the woman’s smile replaced with angst across her face. Lennox hated that she was lying to her friend. She had found the pieces of the lost gospel last week and sold them off to an unnamed bidder in the United States off the dark web. Lennox also hid the lost fragments from Jax and Loch, her other co-worker; she hated herself for it, but she didn’t have the strength to stop what she was doing. Heroin had overtaken her life, and she would do almost anything to get her fix.

“We’ve only found pottery and some human remains. The parchments have yet to be found. But don’t worry, Anne, there’s always tomorrow, and I’m not giving up on finding it.”

Anne took Lennox’s hand and looked her in the eyes. Her once beautiful brown-honey eyes were now clouded and protruding out of her face, with rings of scarred red tissue circling both eyes. Since the woman would not reveal her real name to Lennox for fear of her life, Lennox had to get creative and pick a name for her. When she googled the Turkish name for man, the word “Anne” came up. Lennox found it ironic that their common name for “man” was a personal woman’s name in other parts of the world.

“I believe in you, my child, and you will find what you have been seeking your whole life.” Anne grabbed Lennox’s hand and squeezed it. “I’m not just talking about the lost gospel. You will find peace and acceptance within yourself. You will find love and happiness and see the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob work miracles in your life.”

Anne knew that this would be her last conversation with Lennox and fought back her tears as she watched a vision pass through her mind’s eye. It was a vision of Lennox slumped over with a needle in her arm, her face blue, the light in her green eyes going dark. There was only one way for this vision not to pass. Anne would gladly accept taking Lennox’s place in death if it meant Lennox living and fulfilling her destiny. Anne prayed that her sacrifice would not be in vain, as she knew all too well that man had free will to do what they wanted. That was God’s gift, after all, to mankind, and for better or worse, Lennox could still choose to go down the path of destruction.

“It’s hard for me, Anne. I’m not like you. Your faith comes easily to you.”

“But my life has not.”

“So stupid,” Lennox thought in her head. Lennox dropped her head in shame. “I’m sorry, Anne… I don’t know why I said that. Sometimes, I say things without speaking. I know your life hasn’t been easy. I could never have a smile on my face every day like you do, knowing that I was homeless.”

“My dear Lennox, it is when you try to do life on your own and strive in your own power that you feel that way, but when you depend on Jesus and his peace and grace, you will see your life flourish in ways you never imagined. Jesus found me. He healed me. And… He told me about you ahead of time. I’ve had visions about you for the past two years. I knew one day I would meet you and pass on all my knowledge and the secrets I have kept for so long.”

“What do you mean by that? How did Jesus heal you?” Lennox cried aloud, “You are the kindest and most courageous woman I have ever met, and if he is a God of miracles, then why hasn’t he healed your blindness?”

“I see more now than I ever did with my natural eyes,” Anne explained gently. “Jesus healed me of my anger and rejection of man.”

Anne began to stroke Lennox’s hair. “It’s not up to us who God heals or doesn’t heal. There are purposes God has that are beyond our understanding to comprehend. Most of the time, people do not come to God unless they are suffering; that was how I found Jesus; through my suffering, I began to drop the veils of hate and resentment from my eyes and focus on the God who heals from the inside out. God gave me a child to make up for the two that were stolen from me, and that child for the past four months has been you, Lennox....
