This book offers an interpretation of the unum argumentum. Interpreted as a search for the limit of thought, the argument cannot be understood as an "ontological proof". Afterwards, the author shows which Anselm has been misperceived by subsequent interpreters.

This study offers an interpretation of the argument of the Proslogion as an epitome of Anselm's world of thought. The main part of the book is concerned with the unum argumentum, which constitutes the whole text of the Proslogion. Interpreted as a search for the origin and limit of thought, the argument cannot be understood as an "ontological proof" for the existence of God. Next, the author shows the ways in which Anselm has been misperceived and "mystified" by subsequent interpreters, and argues that the Proslogion must be understood as an element of Anselm's practice of wisdom.

Georgi Kapriev, Ph.D. (1991), is an Associate Professor in Medieval Philosophy at the University of Sofia. He has published books on Augustine, Anselm and early medieval historiography, as well as many essays on various themes in medieval Byzantine and Latin philosophy and intellectual history. He has also translated several medieval Latin texts into Bulgarian, and is an Associate Editor of The Journal for Medieval Philosophy and Culture.
