New Covent Garden is a horticultural market within the remit of MAFF. The Minister has stated that he wishes to dispose of the market, but this requires primary legislation and there is thus a need to look at all the issues. In the meantime the Covent Garden Market Authority is hampered in its efforts to expand. The Committee recommends that the Government with the GLA and the Corporation of London should instigate a review of wholesale markets in London. It should examine their number and location and whether they should be publicly owned and governed by statutory restrictions. In other words there needs to be a strategy.
