Fouteen republics make up the "Near Abroad", but only three - Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan - are rich in oil and natural gas. Russia has supplied the others with their fuel, but is now cutting back deliveries. This study explores the energy choices each republic faces.
Of the 14 republics that make up the "Near Abroad", only three - Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan - are rich in oil and natural gas. The others have been almost completely dependent on Russia for their fuel, and Russia, with its own energy problems has been cutting back deliveries. Other suppliers may have to be secured, but at what price? At the same time, the republics with oil and gas resources are challenged to develop them in a timely and responsible fashion. Success will move them into the world of developed nations; failure will bring economic stagnation and political grief. This study explores the energy choices each republic will face, the likely responses and anticipated results.
