Following a general section on larval stages, this volume examines various species in more detail. It includes chapters on dromiacea, archaeobrachyura, parthenopina, oxyrhyncha, cancridae, brachyrhyncha and oxystomata.
North East Atlantic waters are inhabited by over 120 species of lobster and crab-like crustaceans. Accurate identification of their larvae is necessary for basic research into these animals and also in the assessment of adult stocks of the commerical species. The larval stages of many occur frequently in plankton but are often difficult to identify due to limited knowledge of their morphology. This identification guide will enable specialists and non-specialists to identify the larval stages of the majority of true crab species (brachyurans) that occur in the waters of the North East Atlantic Ocean. It includes detailed descriptions of crab larval morphology, methods of cultivation and an historical account of research in to crab larvae. Illustrated taxonomic keys are provided for the larval stages of over three quarters of crab species occurring in the area. Full synonymies and diagnoses are given for the species together with a complete regional bibliography. This book should prove to be a standard work on the larvae of this commercially important group. This book should be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers involved in marine biology and ecologists.

Review of studies in the North Eastern Atlantic area; review of rearing methods; previous methods; methods used in present study; preparatory methods for the study of larvae; the prezoea; the zoea; the megalopa; gill development in zoeal stages and the megalopa; setal morphology of larvae; development; North Eastern Atlantic reptantia - identification of zoeal stages; summary classification; keys to zoeal sages of reptant genera; diagnostic zoeal features; classification of the larval brachyuran crab species; keys to the larval stages of North Eastern Atlantic brachyurans; references and diagnoses; dromiacea; archaeobrachyura; parthenopina; oxyrhyncha; key to larval stages of genera and species of Majidae; cancridae; brachyrhyncha; key to larval stages of family pinnotheridae; oxystomata.

Both sections are copiously illustrated, including a superb series of SEM plates of setal and other cuticular structures...the book is far more than a key to our local crab larvae...it provides a useful review of comparative larval morphology, backed by Ray's excellent illustrations...If you can afford the book, buy it for it will form an attractive and useful addition to any marine biological library -Journal of Natural History A helpful tool for planktonic research in adjacent areas. - Ethology; ...the book is an indispensable reference... - Amer 2001
