An assessment of the capacity of the Irish Sea to provide yield from its living marine resources, and to understand the factors which affect this yield, by identifying the relevant living resources. This volume is only available as part of a set (isbn=0-85323-157-5).
The Irish Sea is exploited for fishing, waste disposal, transport, recreation and other uses. There is concern over whether these uses are compatible, and can continue without either interfering with each other or compromising the long-term health of the Irish Sea. This book is part of a 5-volume set which aims to investigate these issues. This volume covers the productivity of plankton, zooplankton, seaweed, bacteria and benthos. There is an historical account of the fisheries, and material on the various types of commercial species of fish. It then goes on to consider the environmental effects of marine harvesting, trawling and dredging, and culling. There is also a section on mariculture and finally a guide to the various laws affecting the exploitation of the living resources in the sea. This volume is only available as part of a set (isbn=0-85323-157-5).
