The UK is home to a wide variety of livestock breeds. Some of these can be seen throughout the country while others are extremely rare, victims of changes in farming methods, consumer tastes or simply unlucky circumstance. In this new book Jack draws our attention to 44 breeds in need of protection. They are all native to the UK and most of the breeds featured have less than 1,000 breeding females remaining. Following the style of his previous book, Jack's concise texts explain each breed's history, appearance and uses today. Each text is accompanied by a full page photograph of the breed.

Jack Byard was born in Bradford in Yorkshire where he has lived and worked all his life. He always had a deep affection for his rural heritage and so wrote his first book, Know Your Sheep, with a view to sharing with others the countryside that he loves.
