The early parts of the Manual deal with generic issues related tothe biology, diseases and treatment of bones, joints, muscles andtendons. Arthritis is addressed in detail, with notes on the modernapproach to management. Chapters on surgical principles andinstrumentation, biomaterials, arthroscopy and postoperativemanagement address the general issues encountered in joint surgery.Chapters focussed on each of the major synovial joints, includingthe temporomandibular joint, then follow. Each of thesejoint-specific chapters deals with basic anatomy and surgicalapproaches, before describing the conditions that affect theparticular joint.
Common surgical procedures on joints are described with the use ofOperative Techniques. Possible pitfalls and key points arehighlighted, so as to make maximum use of the experience of theinternational panel of authors. The Operative Techniques areillustrated with the specially commissioned colour drawings thatare so much a hallmark of BSAVA Manuals.
