Providing detailed coverage of ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning systems, this text also contains many examples, problems and Matlab scripts to help readers grasp key concepts. It is an ideal text for graduate students and researchers in electrical and computer engineering, and practitioners in the communications industry, particularly those in wireless communications.
Position estimation of wireless devices has many applications in short-range networks. Ultra-wideband (UWB) signals provide accurate positioning capabilities that can be harnessed in wireless systems to realise these applications. This text provides detailed coverage of UWB positioning systems, offering comprehensive treatment of signal and receiver design for ranging, range estimation techniques, theoretical performance bounds, ranging algorithms and protocols. Beginning with a discussion of the potential applications of wireless positioning, and investigating UWB signals for such applications, later chapters establish a signal processing framework for analysing UWB positioning and ranging systems. The recent IEEE 802.15.4a standard related to UWB is also studied in detail. Each chapter contains examples, problems and Matlab scripts to help readers grasp key concepts. This is an ideal text for graduate students and researchers in electrical and computer engineering, and practitioners in the communications industry, particularly those in wireless communications. Zafer Sahinoglu is currently working at the Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories as a principal technical member, and is a senior member of the IEEE. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2001, receiving their Hashimoto Prize the following year. Sinan Gezici received the B.S. degree from Bilkent University, Turkey, in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University in 2006. From April 2006 to January 2007, he worked as a visiting member of technical staff at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories, Cambridge, Mass, USA. Since February 2007, he has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University. Dr. Gezici's research interests are in the areas of signal detection, estimation and optimization theory, and their applications to wireless communications and localization systems. Currently, he has a particular interest in ultra-wideband systems for communications and sensing applications. Ismail Guvenc is a research engineer at DoCoMo USA Communications Laboratories, Palo Alto, CA. He is a member of the IEEE and won the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the University of South Florida for his Ph.D. dissertation in 2006.
