Next-Generation Materials for Bioelectrochemical Systems focuses on bioelectrochemical approaches from an environmental engineering perspective, utilizing developments in materials science to improve the rate of electrochemical redox reactions. It explains the basics of electrochemistry explores how novel applications of advanced materials can enhance bioelectrochemical systems (BES). Next-generation materials for BES include: anode mediators, cathode catalysts, membrane modifications, materials for energy storage from fuel cells, and advance materials for reactor design. This book covers the basics of materials electrochemistry, redox reactions for contaminant removal, and success stories of various electrochemistry-based techniques in the development of advanced materials BES. It also presents potential future directions of research in applied materials science and environmental electrochemistry.
