This book contains all refereed papers accepted during the 14th International Conference on Complex Systems Design & Management CSD&M 2023 that took place in Beijing, People’s Republic of China by the end October 2023.

Mastering complex systems requires an integrated understanding of industrial practices as well as sophisticated theoretical techniques and tools. This explains the creation of an annual go-between European and Asian forum dedicated to academic researchers and industrial actors working on complex industrial systems architecting, modeling and engineering.

These proceedings cover the most recent trends in the emerging field of complex systems, both from an academic and professional perspective. A special focus was put this year on “New Trends in Complex Systems Engineering.”

The CSD&M series of conferences were initiated under the guidance of CESAM Community in Europe, managed by CESAMES.  Its Asian version took place in Singapore for three consecutive sessions during 2014 and 2018. The fourth Asian edition was held in Beijing in hybrid with the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics (CSAA) as the co-organizer in 2021. Since 2023, its European and Asian conferences merge into one, taking place in China and Europe in turn.

CESAM Community aims in organizing the sharing of good practices in systems architecting and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and certifying the level of knowledge and proficiency in this field through the CESAM certification.

The CESAM systems architecting, and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) certification is especially currently the most disseminated professional certification in the world in this domain through more than 3,000 real complex system development projects on which it was operationally deployed and around 10,000 engineers who were trained on the CESAM framework at international level.

Prof. Daniel Krob:   Prof. Daniel Krob is a senior researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). Daniel Krob worked in algebraic and enumerative combinatorics, algorithms for mobile telecommunications and finite automata and formal languages, before specializing nowadays in systems architecture, systems engineering and systems modeling. He is the author of more than 90 scientific papers and 4 books and holds 2 patents. Daniel Krob founded and directed the “Laboratoire d’Informatique Algorithmique: Fondements et Applications” ( LIAFA) of University Paris 7 for 6 years. He was also the head, for several years, of the steering committees of two major international conferences in combinatorics and theoretical computer science (FPSAC & STACS). At international level, he is also one of the 15 founding members of the Omega-Alpha honor association in Systems Engineering. Daniel Krob is a INCOSE fellow since February 2014.   Dr. Lefei Li:   Dr. Lefei Li is the vice department chair and the director of the Tsinghua Operations and Service Research Lab (TOPS). He received his B.S. degree in Electronic Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2002, M.S. (2004) degree in Industrial Engineering and Ph.D. (2006) degree in Systems and Industrial Engineering from the University of Arizona. Lefei Li joined Tsinghua University in 2006, conducting research in systems engineering, service operations and management, logistics and complex systems modeling and simulation. Dr. Li has managed or actively participated in several urban transportation and logistics/service network design projects, sponsored by top logistics companies or public agencies in China. He has been serving as a PI or co-PI in several research projects funded by the National Science Foundation of China and Ministry of Science and Technology of China.   Prof. Xinguo Zhang:   Prof. Xinguo Zhang is currently  the director of Complex Systems Engineering Research Center,  Tsinghua University, China INCOSE ESEP, President of INCOSE Beijing Chapter. Dr. Zhang is recognized as one of the world’s leading systems engineering experts. He spreads the knowledge and promotes the practice of INCOSE Systems Engineering in China. He focuses on developing and applying methodologies of enterprise architecture, system of systems engineering and model-based systems engineering to solve complex system engineering problems with very high level of creativity. As a former EVP & CIO at AVIC, Dr. Zhang architected the digital engineering strategy and carried out the digital transformation in the aviation domain, which have been expanded to other industrial domains in China.   Dr. Junchen Yao:   Dr. Junchen Yao is currently the vice president and secretary general of the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics(CSAA). He majored in medal materials and thermal treatment and gained his master’s degree from Beihang University (BUAA) in 1988. During 2002–2006, he pursued his doctor degree at BUAA. Dr. Yao was the deputy division director at the Science and Technology Bureau of Aviation Industries of China. He later on took the duties of the deputy director at the Science and Technology Department of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China 1(AVIC 1), director at the Department of Scientific Research of AVIC Foundation Technology Research Institute and director of the AVIC Changcheng Institute of Metrology & Measurement. Dr. Yao has been tracking the frontier of aeronautical materials during his position with AVIC headquarters. He has chaired and participated in quite a few key projects.   Dr. Mengyu Guo:   Dr. Mengyu Guo received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southeast University in 2009 and Ph.D.  degree in Industrial Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2014. Before joining Tsinghua University, Dr. Guo worked for the AVIC research and development center for 3 years as a project engineer and thereafter joined University of California at Berkeley as a postdoctoral researcher and assistant researcher. Dr. Guo joined Tsinghua University in 2020, conducting research in systems engineering, complex system architecting, modeling, simulation and optimization with dozens of journal papers and peer-reviewed conference papers output. His domain expertise includes production, intelligent transportation and healthcare. Dr. Guo is the representative of INCOSE Beijing Chapter and committee member of CSD&M 2021 international conference.
