Bringing together the information on green synthesis of oligopeptides and the preliminary data on green oligonucleotides synthesis, this book bridges the gap between these two areas.
Oligopeptides and oligonucleotides, jointly defined as TIDES, have been neglected in the past as potential drugs due to their short half-life and practical difficulties in the manufacturing processes. The consolidation of iterative synthetic techniques, allowing for design of new chemical entities with better pharmaceutical profiles, has led to renewed interest in these compounds. Large scale manufacturing is therefore now required, and it is important that sustainability and green chemistry are considered from the outset.

As the two classes display many similarities, advances in sustainable approaches can easily be adapted from one class to the other. This book brings together all of the information on green synthesis of oligopeptides, which is well established, and all of the preliminary data on green oligonucleotides synthesis, creating a resource that will help chemists to bridge the gap between these two areas.

Alessandra Tolomelli is an associate professor at the Department of Chemistry “Giacomo Ciamician” at University of Bologna. Her main research interests are the synthesis of bioactive peptidomimetics as ligands of biological receptors, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory agents, using asymmetric synthesis and biocatalysis. All the topics are developed setting up green processes. She is also interested in the conformational analysis of peptides and peptidomimetics using NMR spectroscopy. She is author of about 100 publications. She is involved in several national and international research projects and in collaborative research projects with industrial companies. She is also a member of the board of Directors of the Erasmus Mundus Master in Chemical Innnovation and Regulation, an international degree preparing professional chemists, expert in the field of sustainability and circular economy. Lucia Ferrazzano is a junior assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry “Giacomo Ciamician” at University of Bologna and has previously been a postdoctoral fellow in the same department. Her research interests are mainly focused on the synthesis of oligonucleotides, peptides and peptidomimetic molecules, through green synthetic approaches. She is also interested in the synthesis of new antimicrobial peptides for biomedical applications, and in metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. She is author of 28 publications and 3 patents. She works in collaboration with international industrial companies. Walter Cabri joined the University of Bologna as Full Professor in Organic Chemistry after 35 years in the Pharma industry. His main areas of interest are drug discovery (Neuroscience, Oncology, metabolic diseases, antibiotics and Malaria) and development (chemical & analytical development as well as toxicology) of pharmaceutical products. During his industrial career he brought 12 NCEs into the clinical and >50 generic product into the market. He has designed, developed and industrialized several sustainable processes of pharmaceutical products. Catalysis, green solvents have been a main area of research and, since 2016, he has focused intensively on the area of ‘Tides publishing papers and filing patents on the subject. Overall, he has >140 papers, one book by Oxford University Press “From Bench to Market”, 110 patents/patent applications.
