Storage mites are common pests of stored food and other processed agricultural products and an infestation can occur at any point throughout the supply chain. Their presence is associated with serious hygienic implications and economic loss and can be harmful to the health of humans and animals. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date study of mites associated with these products, covering core concerns including the mites of cheese, ham and sausages, mushrooms and vegetable fibres. Numerous species belonging to different families are described and illustrated in addition to the inclusion of general chapters on: - Systems of Acari - Classification of mites of stored food - External and internal morphology - Bio-ecology - Collecting and detecting, preserving, preparing and rearing - Damage and control. Written by an experienced author within the field, this is an important resource for researchers, laboratory scientists and students involved in acarology, agricultural entomology, pest management, and food preservation, science and safety.
Vincenzo Vacante (Author) Prof. Vincenzo Vacante has an academic degree in Biological Sciences and his last academic position was full Professor of General and Applied Entomology at the Agrarian University of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, Italy. His education and professional career were developed in Italy and different foreign research centers (Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany, England, etc.). His significant scientific contributions to general and applied Entomology include: (1) developing the knowledge of mites living in natural ecosystems and describing new mite species. He also helped develop the knowledge of mites associated with the major agro-ecosystems (citrus, greenhouse crops, vineyards, olive groves, fruit, trees) and the reporting of new Italian species, including natural enemies of the pests of Mediterranean crops. Additionally, he assisted in defining IPM protocols and the application of innovative methods for the study of bio-ecology and prevention of pest attacks (e.g. spatial interpolation methods, meteorological modelling (RAMS) and analysis of decision-making). He has produced 227 scientific publications, and is editor of a number of different books. His scientific activity is characterized by several international collaborations, and by the organization of national and international scientific meetings. He was also a referee and editorial board member of different scientific journals and he coordinated or participated in a number of research projects. He is also a member of a number of national and international scientific societies. Carlos Holger Wenzel Flechtmann (Author) Carlos Flechtmann graduated from the University of São Paulo in 1960 and gained his doctorate there in 1967. He has experience in Agronomy, focusing on Phytosanitation and on: plant mites, taxonomy, mites, eriophyidae, tetranychidae, scolytinae and platypodinae (coleoptera, curculionidae). He is currently a faculty member with the Department of Plant Protection, UNESP, Ilha Solteira campus in Sao Paulo, Brazil and he continues his work on forest entomology, agricultural plant science and mites.
