Biochar for Mitigating Abiotic Stress in Plants provides a unique and leading resource for utilizing biochar to address specific plant health challenges, including osmotic, ionic, and oxidative stress. With a focus on crop yielding plants, the book provides targeted application insights to improve plant health, and resulting crop production. Readers will find important tools toward the identification, treatment, and management of a variety of abiotic stressors through the effective and appropriate application of biochar. This is an important reference for those seeking to apply current knowledge and an inspiration for further research in the area. Biochar is a carbon-rich organic substance produced by the pyrolysis of organic materials in the absence or presence of oxygen. It is an organic matter conditioner that can boost carbon sequestration and organic and inorganic pollutant immobilization. It is a crucial method for soil regeneration. Additionally, biochar facilitates increasing mineral supply and soil organic matter, resulting in soils with increased nutritional content.

Professor Arafat Abdel Hamed Abdel Latef is a professor of plant physiology at the Department of Botany and Microbiology, Faculty of Science, South Valley University, Egypt. He received his BSc in 1998, MSc in 2003, and PhD in 2005 from South Valley University, Egypt. Prof. Arafat has published over 90 research/review articles in high quality international and local journals. He has edited two books for CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC, and one book for Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg. He has also published 24 book chapters in international volumes including John Wiley and Sons Inc., Taylor & Francis Group, Academic Press (Elsevier), and Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg. Prof. Arafat is the recipient of the ParOwn 1207 Post Doctor Fellowship 2007 granted by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which was carried out at the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, China. He serves on the editorial board and guest editor of prestigious journals such as BMC Plant Biology, Frontiers in Plant Science, Plants-Basel and Phyton-international Journal of Experimental Botany. Furthermore, he is an expert reviewer for over 140 international journals. Professor Arafat is ranked among the top 2% of scientists in the world according to Stanford University’s ranking of the top 2% of scientists in the world for 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Professor Arafat has received several awards, including the 2021 Egyptian National Excellence Award, the 2019 South Valley University Excellence Award, the 2019 Top Peer Reviewer Award powered by Publons and Web of Science Group, and the South Valley University Science Publishing Award 2010-2023.
