In the industry of transportation, the demand for sustainable energy solutions and intelligent traffic management has reached a critical juncture. One of the key challenges faced is the efficient utilization of roadways to generate power and support the infrastructure of smart highways. Road piezoelectric energy harvesting (RPEH) is a concept that has sparked widespread interest in both industry and academia. The book, titled Principles and Applications in Speed Sensing and Energy Harvesting for Smart Roads , unravels the intricacies of RPEH and presents a visionary solution to power traffic ancillary facilities and wireless sensor devices on highways. Within its pages lies a transformative proposal – harnessing energy from piezoelectric stacks to not only address the power needs of these critical components but also to enable intelligent vehicle speed sensing. This book is for academic scholars and practitioners alike, navigating the intricate landscape of smart highways. Focused on the latest energy harvesting technologies and vehicle speed sensing, it extends an invitation to delve into communication with smart road displays. Tailored for diverse engineering disciplines—electrical, computer, mechanical, and civil—the book contains cutting-edge research in the domain. Aspiring to be a one-stop source for up-to-date information, it guides researchers, students, and industry professionals through state-of-the-art technologies, fostering a deeper understanding of smart highway systems. Principles and Applications in Speed Sensing and Energy Harvesting for Smart Roads is a versatile reference for researchers, university students, and industry professionals eager to explore the forefront of smart highway technologies. Its value transcends disciplines, making it an essential resource for graduate and undergraduate energy engineering programs worldwide. With a principal contribution as an up-to-date reference source, the book is set to empower practitioners, researchers, academic faculty, and students in their pursuit of excellence in smart highway development.

Luay Taha received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Basra University, the M.Sc. degree in Control and Instrumentation from the University of Technology, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor, Canada, in 2019. He also received a Ph.D. degree in Micro-Engineering and Nano Electronics from UKM University, in 2009. In 2002, he has joined Emirates Airlines/Emirates Aviation University and in 2009, he was promoted to the Assistant Professor rank and appointed as a Program Manager of Electronics Engineering while in Jan. 2014, he was promoted to the Associate Professor rank. In 2017, he was appointed as a sessional instructor at the University of Windsor, to teach different undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and in 2019, he was appointed as a postgraduate fellow to develop new algorithms in the biomedical signal separation of ECG signals using blind source separation techniques. Currently, Dr. Taha is an assistant teaching professor at Penn State Altoona. His research interests include programmable instrumentation, energy harvesting using piezoelectric and electrostatic approaches, and blind source separation of ECG and speech signals. Dr. Taha is a senior member of the IEEE, a member of IEEE signal processing society, a member of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, and a member of the IEEE Educational Activities. Dr. Sohail Anwar is a Professor of Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, Altoona College. In addition, he has served as an invited professor of electrical engineering in several universities located in Poland, Malaysia, France, and China. Such professorships have focused on research and training in nanotechnology, energy, and electrical power systems. He also holds the status of Associate Researcher at the LGCgE Laboratory in France. Dr. Anwar has supervised/co-supervised several funded undergraduate research projects in the topical areas of energy management framework for electric vehicles, smart home energy management, building information modeling integrated with virtual reality, solar wall, smart grid, study of electric load profiles, photovoltaic energy systems, green manufacturing, and energy management for autonomous transport systems. He edited/co-edited several books published by Taylor and Francis Group/CRC Press and IGI Global Press. Dr. Anwar is currently serving as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Electronics, Communication, and Measurement Engineering and serves on the Editorial Boards of Innovative Energy and Research and Open Journal of Energy Efficiency.
