Sustainable Engineering: Concepts and Practices provides insights into current perspectives on sustainable engineering research. It highlights the drivers, motivations, and challenges affecting the development and adoption of sustainable engineering in various sectors of the economy and how they impact sustainable development. Contributions from researchers representing multiple branches of engineering in academia, government laboratories, and industry present alternative approaches to traditional engineering practices. These approaches effect change, making the design, construction, production, and management of products, processes, and systems more environmentally friendly, socially beneficial, and economically profitable. The book will be a trusted reference for graduate students, practicing engineers, and other professionals interested in developing or using sustainable products and systems.

Israel Dunmade, Ph.D., is a Professor of Sustainable Engineering in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Mount Royal University, Calgary. His research interest is in lifecycle engineering - sustainable (water, energy, health, and transport) infrastructure, sustainable design, sustainable manufacturing, lifecycle analysis, circular economy, campus sustainability, and rural sustainability. Dr. Dunmade is the Alberta Regional Director of the Canadian Society for Bioengineering (CSBE) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Society for Bioengineering Foundation. Furthermore, he is a member of the International Network for the Science and Technology of Sustainability. He was a DAAD scholar, the past president of the African Network of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, and former Chair of the International Affairs Division of the American Society for Agricultural and Biological Engineers. He is a recipient of several research grants and awards of recognition and is a certified Professional Engineer, Project Management Professional, and Environmental Professional. He has published two books and authored/co-authored several book chapters, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations.

Michael Olawale Daramola, Ph.D., is a Professor and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is a global scholar with training, teaching, and research experiences from The Netherlands, France, the United States, South Africa, Singapore, Ghana, and Nigeria. He is a chartered engineer with the Engineering Council of the UK and a COREN-registered engineer with the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria. Dr. Daramola's primary research focuses on sustainable energy and environment, with major activities in developing and applying nanomaterials in waste treatment and valorization. The research provides understanding and develops concepts in providing solutions for sustainable energy and environment. Dr. Daramola has been among the world's top 2% of scientists since 2021. He serves on the editorial boards of international journals such as ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering, Materials Today: Proceedings, Groundwater for Sustainable Development, Membranes, and Frontiers in Chemical Engineering. He was the Associate Editor of Chemical Engineering Communications from 2016 to 2020. Dr. Daramola co-edited the book Valorization of Biomass to Value-Added Commodities: Current Trends, Challenges, and Future Prospects (Springer, 2020) and is the author of  Xylenes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Physicochemical Properties (Nova Science Publishers, 2013). He is the national panel member of the South African Bureau of Standard's (SABS) Technical Committee on carbon dioxide capture, transportation, and geological storage (SABS/TC 0265 or ISO/TC 265) and also a national ISO/TC 323 'Circular economy' panel member. Dr. Daramola has produced 54 graduate students (doctorate and master's) and mentored more than 15 early career researchers and academics (postdocs and lecturers). Dr. Daramola Michael has contributed enormously to knowledge creation in engineering with more than 240 publications, including one patent, fifteen book chapters, and two edited books.

Samuel Ayodele Iwarere, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria, and a recipient of the prestigious Future Leaders - African Independent Research (FLAIR) Fellowship, funded by the UK Government as part of the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) via the Royal Society from May 2020 to January 2023. He is a researcher in Plasma Science and Engineering. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, and an MSc.Eng (Chemical) cum laude from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKNZ). He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Plasma Chemistry from UKZN in collaboration with the Plasma Group at Mines ParisTech, France, under the supervision of Professor Deresh Ramjugernath and Professor Laurent Fulcheri. Dr. Iwarere completed three years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UKZN in 2016. He has been the principal investigator on a few Water Research Commission-funded projects. His current research activities involve understanding plasma-liquid interactions in water and wastewater treatment using experimental and computational approaches and other plasma environmental-related applications, including solid waste valorization. He works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of researchers.
