This book offers expert guidance on materials for total hip arthroplasty (THA), providing readers with quick access to well-organized summaries on biomaterials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. It also includes in-depth coverage of biocompatibility and implant problems such as necrosis, ulceration, high toxicity with metals, and allergic reactions. Coverage also emphasizes the mechanical properties of the materials used for prostheses applications, immunity to corrosion, enhanced biocompatibility, complete inertness to the body environment, and the high capacity to join with the bone and other tissues.
Performance of Metals and Ceramics in Total Hip Arthroplasty is an essential reference for engineers and scientists specializing in prostheses design and manufacturing and orthopedic medical professionals. The book can also be used as a study guide for materials science and orthopedics students.

Armando Reyes Rojas, Ph.D., is a researcher at the Advanced Materials Research Center (CIMAV). He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the Autonomous University of Mexico State in 2006. He has 26 years of working in ceramics materials and has published 61 JCR papers. Dr. Reyes has been the advisor for 17 theses in materials science. He is a member of the Mexican Society of Crystallography. His current research interest is directed toward the synthesis of new materials such as advanced ceramics, ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials, and solid oxide fuel cell applications.
Alfredo Aguilar Elguézabal, Ph.D., is a researcher at the Advanced Materials Research Center (CIMAV). He received his Ph.D. from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain. He has 26 years of experience in the field of materials science and has published more than 100 JCR papers on materials science, including nanomaterials, ceramics, and composites.
Alessandro Alan Porporati, Ph.D., is currently in charge of scientific and clinical affairs at CeramTec GmbH. He also holds a visiting researcher position at the University of Trieste. Dr. Porporati has more than 20 years of research experience on zirconia for medical applications and has published three book chapters on this subject. His research interests include biocompatibility of implant materials, elucidating the mechanisms of zirconia phase transformation, and developing innovative ceramic materials for implantology.
Miguel Humberto Bocanegra-Bernal, Ph.D., was a professor (now retired) at the Advanced Materials Research Center (CIMAV). He received his MSc. in Materials Science from the University of Navarra, Spain, in 1987. He has more than 30 years of experience working in both traditional and advanced ceramic materials, with 39 published papers and five patents. He has been the advisor for five master's theses in ceramic materials and has participated in 25 industry projects in the field of ceramics. His current research interest is focused on developing ceramic materials for application in the orthopedic field.
Hilda Esperanza Esparza Ponce, Ph.D., received her doctorate in materials science from Advanced Materials Research Center S.C., México, in 2003. She has more than 25 years of research experience in ceramic materials and published more than 60 papers. Currently, she is a member of the Technical Committee for the National Standardization of Nanotechnology and the National Research System. Her current research is focused on the synthesis of nanoparticles and ceramic processing.
