This comprehensive and engaging text, now in an expanded second edition, is meant for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and covers the fundamental relationships between the structure and properties of materials and biological tissues. The successful integration of material and biological properties, shape, and architecture to engineer a wide range of optimized designs for specific functions is the ultimate aim of a biomaterials scientist. Relevant examples illustrate the intrinsic and tailored properties of metallic, ceramic, polymeric, carbon-derived, naturally-derived, and composite biomaterials. Information about translation of biomaterials to clinical medical devices is included.

Fundamentals of Biomaterials, 2nd Ed. is written in a single voice, ensuring clarity and continuity of the text and content. As a result, the reader will be gradually familiarized with the field, starting with materials and their basic properties and eventually leading to critical interactions with the host environment. The authors also present new topics such as tissue engineering, guided tissue regeneration, and nano- and micro- architecture of biomaterial surfaces. Full of important medical and biological definitions, essential applications, detailed examples, and interesting chapter-ending summaries, this book serves as an incredibly useful teaching text and as a modern introduction to biomaterials research.

This second edition includes new chapters on the historical development of biomaterials, transplants and implants, characterization techniques, and biomedical device production, as well as an expanded chapter on human biology that now also includes biological systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, etc.), plus much more.

Dr. Vasif Hasirci served as a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, Turkey for over 40 years and is currently a professor at Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University in Istanbul, Turkey in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, where he founded the Department of Biomaterials and the Biomaterials Center. He is a chemist and an expert in biomedical, biotechnological and nanotechnological applications of natural and synthetic polymers. He is the founding director of the Center of Excellence in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering (BIOMATEN) at METU and the founding president of the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Society (Turkey). He is a fellow of the Science Academy (Turkey), the International College of Fellows of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (UISBSE-FBSE), and the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) (UK). He is also an honorary member of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB), American Chemical Society, and Turkish Chemistry Society.

He serves on the editorial boards of the journals: Biomaterials, Nanomedicine, J. Biomaterials Science: Polymer Edition, Regenerative Biomaterials, among others. He has 5 patents and patent applications, more than 260 SCI journal papers, supervised over 80 theses, 8858 citations and an H-index of 53 (Web of Science).

Dr. Nesrin Hasirci is a member of the Near East University (NEU, TRNC) and Middle East Technical University (METU, Turkey). Her research is concentrated on biomaterials and tissue engineering applications of polymers and composites (nano and micro systems; material surface studies; controlled drug delivery systems; bone cement; enzyme immobilization; dental and bone implants).  She was a founding member of several interdisciplinary graduate programs at METU, such as Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Micro and Nanotechnology, Polymer Science and Technology, and the BIOMATEN Center. She served as vice chairman of the Chemistry Department at METU, the first chairman of Biomedical Engineering, and twice chairman of Biotechnology. She has supervised 40 M.Sc. and 20 Ph.D. students and was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a fellow of the Science Academy (Turkey) and honorary member of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB), Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Society (Turkey), Turkish Society of Polymer Science and Technology, Turkish Chemistry Society, and Fulbright Alumni Association of Turkey.  She is the recipient of the Science Award of the M. Parlar Foundation and Technology Award of Elginkan Foundation. She has 5 patents, 3 books, 186 SCI journal papers, 16 chapters, and has a H-index of 40 (World of Science).
