Now on the essential reading list for all NIACS candidates, studying for the Royal Society for the Protection of Health - Level 3 Certificate in Asbestos Inspection Procedures. "Asbestos for Surveyors" provides practical assistance to surveyors, with technical information on asbestos and its properties and applications in building materials. It discusses some of the reasons why the Health and Safety Executive are anxious to see asbestos materials in buildings managed properly and covers the current legislation on asbestos. It reviews aspects of the training for surveyors and accreditation by UKAS which will almost certainly become a requirement when current regulations are revised. It has a review of current legislation on asbestos, surveying and sampling techniques. It supplements technical guidance from the HSE such as MDHS 100 and HSG 227.
Bill Sanderson has worked in the Casella Group since 1983 in all areas of asbestos consultancy. Originally a chemist in the printing industry (with an interest in the health and safety aspects), his wide experience in asbestos consultancy over the last 20 years has lead to the provision of training courses for asbestos sampling and measurement. He played a major role in developing the BOHS Proficiency Modules which are now standard training requirements for analysts and consultants in the asbestos industry. He is a member of the HSEs Committee on Fibre measurement and its working group WG2, which produced MDHS 100. He is chairman of the UKAS Asbestos Technical Advisory Committee and the BOHS Special Interest Group on Fibres.
