This work discusses traffic-related pollution and the factors affecting its concentration in the air. The effects of exposure to traffic-related pollution on health are described as well. This book is intended for academics, engineers and professionals involved in assessment of the road transport impact on the environment.
Traffic-related pollutions, apart from the emissions from other anthropogenic sources, significantly decrease the air quality in cities. This is especially true in the case of the areas located in the vicinity of communication routes with high traffic intensity. In accordance with the epidemiological studies, the transport emissions affecting road users, both drivers and pedestrians, have a detrimental effect on health and may contribute to numerous serious illnesses.

This work presents the characteristics of traffic-related pollution and the factors affecting its concentration in the air. The effects of exposure to traffic-related pollution on health are described as well. The transport emissions in Lublin, Poland, are discussed in detail. The results of previous studies on traffic-related environmental pollution are presented, including pollutant concentrations as well as exposures of drivers and pedestrians along one of the busiest roads. The studies account for different seasons and weather conditions. The methods of reducing traffic-related pollution and prospects for improving the urban air quality are described as well.

This book is intended for academics, researchers, engineers and professionals involved in studies and assessment of the road transport impact on the environment.

Bernard Połednik is an Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering at the Lublin University of Technology, Poland. He received his Master’s degree in Physical Chemistry from AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland. He completed post-graduate studies in Environmental Engineering and received a Ph.D. degree from the Lublin University of Technology. His professional interests focus on environmental contaminations and the quality of indoor and outdoor air. Sławomira Dumała, Ph.D. Eng., graduated from the Lublin University of Technology in 2002 and received a Master's degree in Environmental Protection with a specialization in Heating, Ventilation and Air Protection. Since 2005, she has been working at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering of Lublin University of Technology. She received a Ph.D. degree in Technical Sciences in the discipline of Environmental Engineering. She is a double scholarship holder under the Human Capital Operational Program – "Scholarship for PhD students II" and "Scientific scholarships for PhD students working within research teams". She is authorized to prepare energy certificates and characteristics and is an expert on thermal imaging research. Currently, she is involved in the study of indoor air quality, methods of cleaning and removing aerosol and bio-aerosol pollutants. Łukasz Guz, Ph.D. Eng., was born in 1981 in Lubartów, Lublin voivodship, Poland. In 2007, he received an M.Sc. degree at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering of Lublin University of Technology. Since that time, he has been working in Department of Environmental Protection Engineering, and in 2018 he successfully defended his Ph.D. The main fields of scientific activity are indoor and outdoor air pollution, measurement methods in environmental engineering, HVAC and renewable energy systems as well as building physics. He has published over 36 papers, 19 chapters in monographies, 11 Polish patents, and 38 Polish patent applications. Adam Piotrowicz, Ph.D. Eng., was born in Lublin, Poland. In 2001, he received an M.Sc. degree in Environmental Protection from the Lublin University of Technology. In 2012, he successfully defended his Ph.D. at his alma mater. For many years, he has been employed at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering of the Lublin University of Technology, currently as an Assistant Professor. His research interests are related to air pollution from anthropogenic sources in urban areas. He is the author or co-author of several dozen publications in the field of environmental engineering and has several patents.
