Individual volume editors ensure the cohesion of the whole, and to make it as easy as possible to use, chapter titles are identical across each of the volumes. This gives the choice of reading about a specific period in one of the volumes, or following a theme across history by reading the relevant chapter in each of the six.

The Cultural Histories Series

Stefan Berger is Professor of Social History and Director of the Institute of Social Movements and the House for the History of the Ruhr at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. He is the author of numerous books, including Nationalizing the Past (2015) and Germany: Inventing the Nation (2004) and the editor of A Companion to Nineteenth-Century Europe: 1789-1914 (2009). He is, along with Kevin Passmore and Heiko Feldner, one of the Series Editors for Bloomsbury’s successful student book series, Writing History. Jeffrey K. Olick is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology and at the University of Virginia, USA. He is the author of In the House of the Hangman: The Agonies of German Defeat, 1943-1949 (2005) and The Politics of Regret: On Collective Memory and Historical Responsibility (2007). He is also the editor of States of Memory: Continuities, Conflicts, and Transformations in National Retrospection (2003).
