Microgrid Methodologies and Applications provides step-by-guide guidance on the implementation of microgrids projects that is informed by current scientific principles, emergent technologies such as modern power electronic interfaces, energy storage systems, multi-vector energy systems, and a close study of recent case studies. Addressing the full end-to-end microgrid project lifecycle, the work encompasses planning, design, operation, control, trading and evaluation, with a significant focus on novel business model, regulation and policy considerations. The book explains to readers how they can operationalize robust microgrids which account for engineering reality, uncertainties, and operating constraints.

It delivers precise and rigorous real case studies for project managers, designers and policy and decision-makers. The methodologies section provides step-by-step guidance on implementing projects for postgraduate students, researchers and practitioners, while the applications section provides an array of demonstrative ‘case studies which exemplify the use of optimal methods and leading-edge technologies.

Chengshan Wang received his B.Eng. M.Eng and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 1983, 1985 and 1991, respectively. He became a Full Professor with Tianjin University in 1996. He was a Visiting Scientist with Cornell University from 1994 to 1996 and as a Visiting Professor with Carnegie Mellon University from 2001 to 2002. He is the Chief Scientist of China 973 Project, “Research on the Key Issues of Distributed Generation Systems” from 2009 to 2013. His research interests include distribution system analysis and planning, distributed generation system and Microgrid, and power system security analysis. He was a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He has published 5 books in related areas and has been committed to the compilation of several China National strategic reports. Tao Xu is currently an associate professor with the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Tianjin University. China. She received her M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Liverpool and the University of Plymouth, UK in 2003 and 2007, respectively. She then became a Post-Doc researcher in the New and Renewable Energy Group at the University of Durham, UK. She has carried out research which concentrates on the challenges associated with the widespread integration and control of distributed renewables. She has published many papers in smart grids in international leading journals, and has acted as PI in a number of international collaborations on microgrids. Yixin Liu received the B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 2013 and 2018, respectively. He is currently a lecturer with Tianjin University. His research interests include distribution system analysis and planning, energy management system of Microgrid. He has published widely on smart grids. He has acted as a member of the working group for the IEEE Recommended Practice for the Planning and Design of the Microgrid (IEEE Std 2030.9TM-2019). As one of the main R&D personnel, Dr. Liu has developed a Microgrid energy management system, which has been successfully applied in China, Japan, Maldives, and other countries.
