Recognising the soft ground commonly found in coastal areas, the book introduces various ground improvement technologies including seismic reinforcement and liquefaction countermeasures and addresses the measures to be taken to sustain ground against external forces. Reliable Japanese ground improvement technologies are presented as well as the latest Building Information Modelling (BIM/Information and Communication Technology (ICT) used in their execution. The book also includes measures that can be taken against contaminated soil and considers ground improvement design on site.

Hidenori Takahashi graduated from Kyoto University in 2000, obtained his Master of Engineering in 2002. Then, he joined the Port and Airport Research Institute (PARI) and has been a researcher of geotechnical engineering. In 2008, he got a PhD from Kyoto University on the behaviour of ground improved by Sand Compaction Pile method. He is currently the head of Soil Stabilization Group of PARI, after working for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in charge of designing port and airport facilities in the metropolitan area of Japan and a visiting researcher at Imperial College London.
