Human beings are being threatened by various kinds of biomedical and environmental difficulties, and optics is expected to offer powerful means to overcome these difficulties. The aim of this book is to introduce the state-of-the-art optical methods in biomedical and environmental sciences, which includes optical methods for sensing, detecting, analyzing, evaluating, predicting, monitoring and warning natural and technological disasters as well as human diseases.
Part 1 Biomedical optics and imaging including new microscopy: rotation measurement of optically trapped particles, A. Yamamoto and I. Yamaguchi; fiber-optic plate microscopy for direct visualization of internal tissue, A. Miyakawa; complex object profilometry and its application for medicine, X.-Y. Su; an analysis of VEPs elicited by luminance modulated stimulation, K. Momose et al; 3-D image formation, C.J.R. Sheppard and M. Gu. Part 2 Optical methods in biomedical research including testing and assessment: current progress and future in laser medicine, K. Atsumi; measurement of contacting pressure distribution by computer image processing, Y. Niitsu; a microscope image analysis system for histochemically stained multicolor specimen, K. Horie et al; stress conditions on the human eye measured by corneal polarization effects, M.H. Khin et al; intelligent optical sensors by bioelectronic technologies, T. Miyasaka. Part 3 Environmental monitoring including cultural heritage protection: monitoring of atmospheric environment using laser remote sensing methods, N. Sugimoto; measurement of temperature changes using a multiplexed optical fiber interferometer, K. Hamano and I. Yamaguchi; a simple device for measuring spatial intensity distribution of UVR as a function of sun position, P. Greguss and T. Szalay; an improved infrared selective surface for radiative cooling and its experimental result, K. Hyakumura; laboratory simulator for investigation sea water mixing, B. Grudin et al; photoacoustic spectroscopy of trace gases expanded to the wavelength region of the CO-overtone laser, S. Buscher et al. (Part Contents).
