Addresses an area that has expanded to include not only RF and microwave engineers, but thousands of digital designers as well. Explains pivotal issues in signal integrity such as ground bounce, crosstalk, and ringing noise margins.
Twenty-first century electronic system design is being strongly influenced by signal integrity (SI) issues. As we stretch the speed and performance envelope of our digital and mixed-signal designs, interconnections under 1 inch in length begin to behave like transmission lines and antennas. For 40 years, SI techniques have been used by microwave and RF engineers, but now almost every digital designer needs to understand signal propagation and be able to deal with crosstalk, ground bounce, ringing noise margins, impedance matching, and decoupling. The term signal integrity encompasses the environment in which the signals exist-all the techniques that ensure the signals are undistorted and don't cause problems to themselves and to other system components. It has application to component/package design, circuit board layout and design, electromagnetic interference, power distribution and other design aspects. This is a rapidly growing field and there is no one right way to learn it or practice it. Much of the technical information available is found in application notes and papers written by component companies.
The Signal Integrity Handbook offers digital and mixed-signal design engineers a complete practical reference for a challenging field affecting almost every electronics designer today. It covers the big picture theory, design issues, SI testing procedures, and modeling techniques that engineers need to understand and use.
