Provides detailed information on using fullerenes (bucky-balls) in photodynamic therapy, one of the most actively studied applications of photonic science in healthcare. The book runs the gamut from an introduction to the history and chemistry of fullerenes to their application as photosensitizers for cancer and antimicrobial inactivation.
This book provides detailed and current information on using fullerenes (bucky-balls) in photodynamic therapy (PDT), one of the most actively studied applications of photonic science in healthcare. This will serve as a useful source for researchers working in photomedicine and nanomedicine, especially those who are investigating PDT for cancer treatment and infectious disease treatment. The book runs the gamut from an introduction to the history and chemistry of fullerenes and some basic photochemistry, to the application of fullerenes as photosensitizers for cancer and antimicrobial inactivation.

Dr Lucas Freitas de Freitas is a Biomedical Professional, graduated at State University of Londrina, Brazil (2009), with a PhD degree in bioengineering from University of São Paulo, Brazil (2016). Part of his PhD research was performed under supervision of Professor Dr Michael Hamblin from Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Harvard Medical School (2014–15). Dr Lucas has publications in the biomedical field, especially on light interaction with microorganisms and with the human body, cancer therapies and diagnostics, and oxidative stress. Michael R Hamblin PhD is a Principal Investigator at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, an Associate Professor of Dermatology, Harvard Medical School and affiliated faculty at Harvard-MIT Division of Health Science and Technology. He directs a laboratory of around a dozen scientists who work in photodynamic therapy and low-level light therapy. He has published 320 peer-reviewed articles, is Associate Editor for 10 journals and serves on NIH Study-Sections. He has edited 11 proceedings volumes together with eight other major textbooks on PDT and photomedicine. In 2011 Dr Hamblin was honored by election as a Fellow of SPIE.
