The unique approaches proposed in this book are ‘glocal’ in character, as they draw on the experiences of South Africans to address the global issue of ‘smart communities’. The book blends together social and technical aspects, and presents the experiences from a range of community practitioners, academics, architects and engineers.

Dr Jackie Phahlamohlaka completed his MSc in Computational and Applied Mathematics at Dalhousie University, Canada, and his PhD in Information Technology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is currently a Chief Researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He is the founder of SEIDET and the Chairman of its Board of Directors. He completed the Executive National Security Programme (ENSP) at the South African National Defence College in 2007.
