This book results from the talks presented at the First Conference on Transfer between Mathematics & Industry (CTMI 2019). Its goal is to promote and disseminate the mathematical tools for Statistics & Big Data, MSO (Modeling, Simulation and Optimization) and their industrial applications. In this volume, the reader will find innovative advances in the automotive, energy, railway, logistics, and materials sectors. In addition, Advances CTMI 2019 promotes the opening of new research lines aiming to provide suitable solutions for the industrial and societal challenges. Fostering effective interaction between Academia and Industry is our main purpose with this book. CTMI conferences are one of the main forums where significant advances in industrial mathematics are presented, bringing together outstanding leaders from business, science and Academia to promote the use of mathematics for an innovative industry.

Peregrina Quintela is BSc Mathematical Sciences by the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela in 1982. She has a PhD in Mathematical Sciences by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Madrid, Spain) in 1986 and is Docteur de l'Université de Paris VI in Mathematics (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, France) since 1988. Currently, Peregrina Quintela is Full Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Santiago de Compostela, specialized in mathematical modelling, mathematical analysis, and the numerical simulation of models arising from the fields of Physics, Engineering or Applied Sciences. In the field of mathematical modelling, she has mainly focused her research on solid thermo-mechanics; laws of linear and nonlinear behaviour (Hooke, Norton Hoff, anisotropy); linear and non-linear boundary conditions (mixed conditions, contact conditions with or without friction); heat transfer phenomena and their coupling with mechanical ones; and cracks analysis and its detection by Rayleigh waves.  In these research fields, she has led or participated in several research projects and contracts with companies dealing with: the simulation of thermo-mechanical deformation in cooling metal casting aluminium (ALCOA-INESPAL); the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of the cast process of blast furnaces for steel production (ArcelorMittal); the development of safe packaging systems to ship large stones (VascoGallega de Consignaciones-Kaleido); thermal and mechanical simulation of a heat exchanger (DETEGASA) and thermomechanical deformation of a filter bag structure (SiderNaval). Due to her interest in science transfer she has also been involved in modelling thermoelectric phenomena with phase change arising in the process of electrolysis of aluminium; the thermo-hydrodynamic phenomena to predict the water quality of a lake in an open-cast mine (Lignitos de Meirama); heat transfer coupled to a damage model to assess burns by airbags (Dalphi Metal); optimization of the cut of granite blocks to satisfy an order (Granitos Montefaro) and the training of technicians in the field of business. Her broad interest in research and transference has proved valuable to be up-to-date with her research, and publishing in scientific journals about several topics in which Mathematics are an essential tool. Currently, she is the President of the Spanish Network for Mathematics and Industry (math-in), the Director of the Technological Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI) and member of the Board of the European Service Network of Mathematics for Industry and The second key experience of their team is its longstanding cooperation with CNES (the French Space Agency) for over one decade, where the team contributed the image restoration chain of the Earth observation satellites SPOT5 and the recently launched Pléiades, and is currently contributing to establish reliable autonomous stereovision algorithms to exploit the tri-stereo Pleiades images. their team has invented for CNES a new and mathematically proven correlation technique which is deposited jointly by UIB and CNES. He has published more than 50 scientific papers in JCR indexed journals and he has directed or co-directed 5 doctoral theses. The collaboration with companies has led to the deposition of 3 patents of which he is co-inventor.

Prof. Bartomeu Coll is a mathematician who did his doctoral thesis in the field of qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations at the Universitat Autonoma of Barcelona (UAB), in 1987. During 1988- 1989 he obtained a post-doctoral fellowship for a stay in Paris with Professor Jean-Michel Morel by starting the investigation in the field of mathematical processing of digital images. Until 2017, He lead an image processing project founded by the Spanish government, which has been renewed every three years since 1998. Now, He participates with half dedication in two national projects, one of dynamic systems and the other of image processing. On the industrial level, their team at UIB has been a permanent technology transfer contract, renewed every year since 2006 until 2016 with the company DxO, one of the world leaders in image processing, whose image processing chains equips currently more than 300 millions cameraphones. During this period he has led this Project with the DxO company. Adaptations of their algorithms (nonlocal means, self-similarity demosaicking) are implemented in the raw converter of the software DxO Pro and in hardwarer for the cameraphones. A still more visible effect of the algorithms conceived by the UIB and CMLA teams is the fact that fast hardware implementations of these algorithms have been built by DxO and integrated so far in more than 300 millions cameraphones (Nokia, Samsung,...).
The second key experience of their team is its longstanding cooperation with CNES (the French Space Agency) for over one decade, where the team contributed the image restoration chain of the Earth observation satellites SPOT5 and the recently launched Pléiades, and is currently contributing to establish reliable autonomous stereovision algorithms to exploit the tri-stereo Pleiades images.

Rosa M. Crujeiras is an Associate Professor at the Department of Statistics, Mathematical Analysis and Optimization at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). She obtained her PhD in Mathematics in January 2007 and has been a post-doctoral researcher at the Institut de Statistique, Biostatistique et Sciences Actuarielles, Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium). She has been the secretary of the Institut of Mathematics at the USC, and since June 2013 until January 2015 she was the vice-dean of the Faculty of Mathematics. Since January 2015 until June 2017, she was deputy of the Vice-rectorship for Communication and Coordination at USC, becoming vice-rector from that date until June 2018. She is also an associate researcher at the Technological Institute of Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI), participating in different projects with the industrial sector. Her research interest is focused on non-parametric statistical methods with application in environmental sciences.

José Durany, PhD degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in 1983. From 1979 till nowadays he worked at University Santiago de Compostela and University of Vigo, Spain, (Professor since 1992) with teach, research and management  responsibilities. His research interests are in the areas of Applied Mathematics:  finite element methods for partial differential equations and Glaciology and Tribology applications. He has published in international journals in these areas and he is author or co-author of over 40 papers JCR and more than 80 national or international congress presentations on these topics. He has been leader in some national and international research projects and industry contracts, and has attended as expert in many scientific and educational committees. Actually, he is Coordinator of the Master in Industrial Mathematics at University of Vigo, Spain, and member of the Steering Committee of the Technological Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI, Spain).
