The book addresses the topic of integrated energy systems and networks by also providing a comprehensive overview of the emerging technologies and systems, through the characterization of paradigm energy shift. It focus on the technologies and systems having a major role in integrated energy systems, by addressing topics such as: renewable energy and distributed energy resources, power conversion technologies including Power-to-Gas (PtG), Power-to-Liquid (PtL), and Power-to-Heat (PtH), the role of hydrogen in low-carbon energy future, storage technologies of different energy carriers, electric mobility, nearly zero-energy and possibly positive-energy buildings, and renewable energy communities.

Dr. Giorgio Graditi received the Ph. D and the MSc degree (cum laude) in electrical engineering from the University of Palermo (Italy). Since 2000, he is a Researcher at ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development). From October 2011 until November 2018, he was the head of Photovoltaic Systems and Smart Grid Unit of ENEA; since December 2018, he is leading the Solar Thermal and Smart Network Division of ENEA. He is currently serving as Coordinator of the Scientific Technical Committee of Italian Technological Cluster on Energy and he is also the president of MEDENER - Mediterranean Association of National Agencies for Energy Management, energy efficiency and the development of renewable energy sources. In 2017, he received the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor in the sector of electrical energy engineering. His main research interests are power systems design and control; power system conversion; PV, CSP electrical and thermal design, characterization and testing; microgrids and smart grids modelling and control; design, management and control of multi-energy hub systems by multi-objective optimization approach. He has been responsible for several National and European (FP7, H2020) projects within renewable energy and smart grid topics. He is the vice-coordinator of Joint Programme on Smart Grid within European Energy Research Alliance (EERA). He has supervised several MSc and Ph. D theses. He is also peer review member of editorial and advisory board of scientific journals, and chairman in international conference. He is author of more than 230 scientific papers, with Scopus h-index of 31, published in the proceedings of international conferences which include highly cited papers.Dr. Marialaura Di Somma received the MSc Degree (cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering for Energy and Environment and the Ph. D degree in Mechanical Systems Engineering from the University of Naples Federico II (Italy), in 2012 and 2016, respectively. In 2014, she held a position as visiting research assistant at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Connecticut (CT, USA). Since December 2014, she is Research Engineer of the Smart Grid and Energy Networks Laboratory, Energy Technologies Department of ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development). Her main research interests are design and operation optimization of DER in the context of local energy systems through multi-objective approach, bidding strategies of DER aggregators for participation to the various market options, demand response, multi-carrier energy systems modelling and optimization, and power systems design and control. Since 2016, she is member of the Steering Committee and General Assembly of the European Energy Research Alliance ? Joint Programme on Smart Grids, whereas since 2017, she is member of Mission Innovation ? Innovation Challenge 1 on Smart Grids. She is scientific coordinator of several National and European projects on DER scheduling and control and smart grid topics. She has supervised several MSc theses, and international fellowship programmes. She is guest editor for special issues of international scientific journals. She has been plenary speaker in several scientific conferences, chair in international conferences and member of scientific committees. She is author of many scientific papers published in international journals and proceedings of international conferences which are highly cited.
