Nanotechnology in Medicine and Biology brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts from the fields of materials science, nanotechnology, medicine and biomedical engineering to introduce new nanoscale biomaterials and their applications, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the human body. The book presents the fundamentals for understanding the design, properties and selection of nanobiomaterials as well as their real-world applications in medicine. Each chapter addresses current regulations, manufacturing processes, and translation issues of nanobiomaterials for key applications. A discussion of current protocols and their benefits and disadvantages is also included.

This book provides comprehensive background and knowledge in the field of nanobiomaterials that is suitable for academics, scientists and clinicians.

Dr. Huinan H. Liu currently is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering in the Bourns College of Engineering, and participates in the interdisciplinary Materials Science and Engineering Program, the Stem Cell Center, the Microbiology Program, the Cellular, Molecular, and Developmental Biology (CMDB) Program, and the Biomedical Sciences Program of the School of Medicine, at the University of California at Riverside (UCR). She received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University in 2008 and her M.S. and B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Purdue University and the University of Science and Technology in Beijing. After her Ph.D., she worked as a senior scientist at NanoMech to translate nanomaterials to clinically viable products that benefit the people in need. Her research focuses on engineering novel biodegradable materials and nanostructured interfaces for controlling cellular functions toward improving tissue regeneration and reducing infections. She has supervised 30+ graduate students and 100+ undergraduate researchers since she established her laboratory at UCR in 2011. Her work has led to 100+ refereed journal articles, 30 conference proceeding papers, 4 books, 14 invited book chapters, 2 issued patents, 80+ invited talks, and 160 conference presentations and abstracts. Dr. Liu is the recipient of the following awards: 2015 University of California Regents Faculty Development Award, 2012 American Heart Association National Scientist Development Award, 2012 Hellman Faculty Fellowship, etc. Dr. Liu served as a symposium organizer and session chair for World Biomaterials Congress (WBC) quadrennial meetings, Society for Biomaterials (SFB) annual meetings, Materials Research Society (MRS) annual meetings, TMS annual meetings, etc. Dr. Shokuhfar is an expert in the relatively new area within biomedical engineering known as in-situ liquid bioelectron microscopy, and also the area of smart and multifunctional nanobiomaterials, placing her on a short list of pioneers in these fields. She has published 100 refereed papers, 6 book chapters, and has made more than 30 oral presentations of her work in invited talks and seminars at national and international venues. Her research has been presented in conferences (posters, proceedings) more than 100 times, and has been frequently picked up by media sources and scientific journals, such as The Economist, Science Daily, Orthopedic Design and Technology Magazine, Daily Mining Gazette, ABC 10 TV, Vimeo, CNN and Phys.org. As further evidence of the impact of her research and educational activities she has been recognized with numerous national awards, among which the “NSF CAREER Award” that pioneers biomineralization at nanomaterial/protein interface, the “SFB Ortho SIG Faculty Abstract Award”, “TMS Young Leaders Award”, “DSL Young Scientist Award”, and “INSIGHT Diversity Award for Inspiring Women in STEM”. Dr. Shokuhfar has served as the Chair for Orthopaedic Biomaterials SIG at the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) till 2021 and is currently the Vice Chair for Nanomaterials SIG at SFB. She’s been the lead symposium organizer for the “Next Generation Nanobiomaterials for Orthopedic Applications” at the 2019 SFB meeting, the 143, 144, and 145 Annual Meetings of The Materials Society (TMS), and has been session Chair for more than 30 sessions in several conferences including SFB,TMS, BMES, ORS. She serves at the editorial board of the International Journal of Nanomedicine and as the guest editor of Journal of Functional Biomaterials (JFB) and Advisor for JOM, Special Issue on “Functional Materials: Materials in Medicine and Bioengineering”. She has served in several leadership positions and was selected by the Crain’s Leadership Academy in Chicago. Dr. Sougata Ghosh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology, School of Science, RK University, India. He obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Microbiology from Savitribai Phule Pune University, India. He is also Visiting Professor at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand and Department of Chemical Engineering, Northeastern University, Boston, USA. He was principal investigator of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India funded Foldscope Research Project. He has filed seven patents on novel nanodrugs and published more than seventy highly cited research articles in various international journals such as the International Journal of Nanomedicine, Journal of Nanobiotechnology, Journal of Nanomaterials, Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. He has edited ten books and contributed to one hundred fifty book chapters. As speaker he has addressed numerous international conferences, the most notable being ICMAR 2023 at Cebu Normal University, Philippines, 1st JICEST-2023 at University of Jambi, Indonesia, IJAS-2019 at Harvard University, USA; ITNANO, Northeastern University, USA; ASM Biodefense, Washington D.C. USA; Nano-Bio-Med-2013, Italy and BioMicroWorld-2013, Spain. He is a reviewer for various reputed journals such as Nanoscale, Journal of Photochemistry & Photobiology, B: Biology, Journal of Diabetes Research, International Journal of Advances in Engineering Research, International Journal of Research in Science and Technology, Chemotherapy Research and Practice, Journal of Nanomedicine & Biotherapeutic Discovery, Journal of Nanomedicine and Nanotechnology, Applied Nanoscience and Arabian Journal of Chemistry.
