Intensifying Activated Sludge Using Media-Supported Biofilms will be of interest to practicing wastewater treatment process designers, along with those seeking more compact and energy-efficient wastewater treatment options. The advantages of Moving Bed Biological Reactor (MBBR)-based hybrid processes are now well-established in practice, leading to their increased use in the field. Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR)-based hybrid processes are much newer and offer further systematic process and energy advantages. This book examines the evolution of hybrid technologies as well as the potential for continued improvement of biological wastewater treatment techniques.

Features:

Reviews current approaches for intensifying biological wastewater treatment processes and their mechanistic bases.

Examines hybrid suspended growth/biofilm-based wastewater treatment processes, including the newly-developed MABR-based processes, and their unique dynamic performance characteristics.

Presents a novel method for characterizing the performance and process intensification advantages of hybrid processes.

Provides guidance for simulating the performance of hybrid processes, including oxygen transfer in MABR hybrid processes.

Glen T. Daigger, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, NAE is currently Professor of Engineering Practice at the University of Michigan and President and Founder of One Water Solutions, LLC, a water engineering and innovation firm. He previously served as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for CH2M HILL where he was employed for more than 35 years, as well as Professor and Chair of Environmental Systems Engineering at Clemson University. Actively engaged in the water profession through major projects, and as author or co-author of more than 100 technical papers, five books, and several technical manuals, he contributes to significantly advance practice within the water profession. He has advised many of the major cites of the world, including New York, Los Angles, San Francisco, Detroit, Singapore, Hong Kong, Istanbul, and Beijing. Deeply involved in professional activities, he is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Water Research Reuse Foundation (TWRF), and a Past President of the International Water Association (IWA). The recipient of numerous awards, including the Kappe, Freese, and Feng lectures and the Harrison Prescott Eddy, Morgan, and the Gascoigne Awards, and the Pohland Medal, he is a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a Distinguished Fellow of IWA, and a Fellow of the Water Environment Federation (WEF). A member of a number of professional societies, Dr. Daigger is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineers. Dwight Houweling, Ph.D., P.Eng. is the ZeeLung process team leader at SUEZ Water Technologies & Solutions where he leads a variety of R&D activities related to development and commercialization of membrane aeration biofilm technology. Prior to joining SUEZ, Dwight worked with CH2M HILL on the design and optimization of municipal sewage plants and as a process model developer for the industry leading BioWin™ software package. In addition to this book, Dwight has authored or co-authored dozens of technical papers and co-wrote a chapter for the Water Environment Federation (WEF) book on shortcut nitrogen removal. Dwight is married with three children and is motivated by the goal of environmental sustainability so that the world his children and grandchildren inherit will be a good one.
