Explores the rich and fascinating history of Harrogate through an examination of some of its greatest architectural treasures.
Harrogate in 50 Buildings examines the architectural treasures of this famous Yorkshire spa town. Established local author Malcolm Neesam has selected fifty of Harrogate’s most significant architectural and historical buildings and describes their provenance, design, materials and use. Many of Harrogate’s important older buildings were created to serve the spa that developed after 1571, and the design of these buildings often reflected the visitors’ needs for accommodation, spa treatments, entertainment and bodily exercise. The uniqueness of Harrogate largely derives from the spa associations of its buildings. More recently, with the decline of British spas, Harrogate has managed to continue to build innovative and interesting buildings that enrich the community’s architectural heritage.

Join author Malcolm Neesam as he explores Harrogate’s finest architectural marvels in a new and accessible way.

Malcolm Neesam was born in Harrogate and left the University of Leeds with the qualifications of a professional archivist and librarian, subsequently working in Hereford, Leeds, London and York where for twenty-five years he was North Yorkshire’s County Music and Audiovisual Librarian. He is a much-published author, including a history of Harrogate International Festivals, published in 2017 to mark the the fiftieth anniversary of their establishment in 1966. In 1996 Harrogate Borough Council awarded Malcolm the Freedom of the Borough for his services as the town’s historian.
