The aim of this book is to develop in the reader a clear understanding of the basic concepts of engineering surveying. It is intended for engineers on BTEC and degree courses, and as a reference work for practitioners. The accent throughout is on the most modern procedures.
The aim of this book is to develop in the reader a clear understanding of the basic concepts of engineering surveying. The accent throughout is on the most modern procedures in use now and possibly well into the future. To this end, there has been a radical deletion from this edition of those topics which are never used in practice but tend to be perpetuated in literature because of the concepts they illustrate. The most important development in recent years is the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system. It is felt that the procedures developed using this system will eventually result in its use for fixing the position of three-dimensional control, detail surveys, setting-out and deformation monitoring. To appreciate GPS fully, engineers will require a knowledge of the elements of astrogeodesy, co-ordinate systems, reference datums and transformations. Another major development is that of land and geographic information systems (LIS, GIS). These spatially-related databases are invaluable tools in the proper management and use of information vital to the engineer.
Information technology in general has had a profound effect on data capture, processing and plotting, digital mapping and terrain modelling, and are dealt with where appropriate. Surveys specific to tunnelling are dealt with in detail, along with other areas of construction surveying. The text covers engineering surveying for civil, mining and municipal engineers on BTEC and degree courses. It is also intended as a useful work of reference for practitioners.
