Brings together the information on the theory and practice of engine testing and test plant design. This book includes topics, such as: computer control and data logging of test procedures; water supply and treatment; combustion air, supply, treatment, effects on performance; drive shaft design; and, exhaust emissions and legislation.
The first edition of this book appeared in 1995, and has since gained widespread acceptance by practising test engineers on both sides of the atlantic.

The purpose of this book is to bring together in one volume the large and scattered body of information on the theory and practice of engine testing and test plant design to which any engineer responsible for work of this kind must have access.

The authors have long experience of all aspects of engine testing and have become aware that much of the essentially eclectic knowledge they had amassed was not available in any readily accessible form and indeed was in danger of being lost to the current generation of young engineers.

Since publication three years ago, there has been considerable 'feedback', and the authors have become aware that amplification of several topics was desirable. Particular areas where the treatment has been expanded include:
* computer control and data logging of test procedures
* water supply and treatment
* combustion air, supply, treatment, effects on performance
* drive shaft design (a subject clearly of wide concern)
* exhaust emissions and legislation: an update of this rapidly developing subject
In addition a whole new section has been devoted to chassis dynamomenters and test methods for complete vehicles.

A.J. (Tony) Martyr has been either the sole or a co-author of all editions of ‘Engine Testing’. For the last 50 years he has held senior technical positions in companies, internationally involved in the design and testing of automotive and marine powertrains. His published works include a book on Project Management, and papers on subjects covering Dynamometry and the International Transfer of Technology.

The test cell as a system: an overall view; Test cell design: an overall view; Controls and the control room - the electrical installation; Ventilation and air conditioning; Vibration and noise; Flow systems: fuel, water, combustion air and exhaust; Choosing the right dynamometer; Coupling the engine to the dynamometer; Measurement of torque, power, speed and fuel consumption; acceptance and type tests, accuracy of the measurements; Measurement of combustion air consumption; Thermal efficiency and measurement of heat losses - ideal standard cycles; Measurement of mechanical losses in engines; Effects of air/fuel ratio, fuel quality and mixture preparation - cylinder pressure diagrams and combustion analysis; Exhaust emissions; Transient testing; Chassis or rolling road dynamometers; Tribology and engine testing; Data logging and computerized engine test cell control; The context of the test department: organization and communications, the log book and the technical report.
