Presents an interdisciplinary approach to the industrially important field of combustion, where combustion is understood as a particular exothermic chemical reaction pathway governed by transport processes.
This text presents an interdisciplinary approach to the industrially important field of combustion, where combustion is understood as a particular exothermic chemical reaction pathway governed by transport processes. The contributions provide an overview of the current state of conceptualizations. Starting from well-known equations from hydrodynamics, thermodynamics and chemical kinetics, the authors obtain the essential traits of combustion using mathematical methods. The four major topics treated are turbulent flow driven by surface and volume forces; turbulent combustion; stability of flame surfaces and interfaces between phases; and reaction-diffusion problems, including convective stability.
