Eco-efficient Repair and Rehabilitation of Concrete Infrastructures provides an updated state-of-the-art review on eco-efficient repair and rehabilitation of concrete infrastructure. The first section focuses on deterioration assessment methods, and includes chapters on stress wave assessment, ground-penetrating radar, monitoring of corrosion, SHM using acoustic emission and optical fiber sensors. Other sections discuss the development and application of several new innovative repair and rehabilitation materials, including geopolymer concrete, sulfoaluminate cement-based concrete, engineered cementitious composites (ECC) based concrete, bacteria-based concrete, concrete with encapsulated polyurethane, and concrete with super absorbent polymer (SAPs), amongst other topics.

Final sections focus on crucial design aspects, such as quality control, including lifecycle and cost analysis with several related case studies on repair and rehabilitation. The book will be an essential reference resource for materials scientists, civil and structural engineers, architects, structural designers and contractors working in the construction industry.

Dr. F. Pacheco-Torgal is a principal investigator at the University of Minho, in Portugal. He currently holds the title of Counsellor from the Portuguese Engineers Association and has authored more than 300 publications. He is a member of the editorial boards for 9 international journals. He has acted as a foreign expert in the evaluation of 30 PhD theses. In the last 10 years he has been a Member of the Scientific Committee for almost 60 conferences most of them in Asian countries. He is also a grant assessor for several scientific institutions in 15 countries including the UK, US, Netherlands, China, France, Australia, Kazakhstan, Belgium, Spain, Czech Republic, Chile, Saudi Arabia, UA. Emirates, Croatia, Poland, and the EU Commission. He has also been an invited reviewer for 125 international journals and has reviewed almost 1200 papers and has been the lead editor of 27 books. Robert Melchers is a Full Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Newcastle in Australia. He was the founding editor of the Australian Journal of Structural Engineering. Professor Melchers' research contributes to creating a better understanding of the corrosion of steel in marine environments. Professor Melchers' research into structural reliability and corrosion modelling of steel and concrete structures has won him many international awards and invitations to contribute to international research projects. In 2013 he was awarded the Engineers Australia John Connell Medal, presented annually to a structural engineer who has made a significant national and international contribution to the profession. Xianming Shi is a professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Washington State University, USA, He is the Founding Director of new USDOT National University Transportation Center, National Center for Transportation Infrastructure Durability & Life-Extension (TriDurLE). He also serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Springer Nature Journal, Journal of Infrastructure Preservation & Resilience, and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation. His research contributions include more than 150 scholarly journal articles, several books, an international patent, and numerous other publications, with more than 7,000 citations by peers. His research has led to better understanding of how both nanoscience and nano-engineering can benefit infrastructure durability and enable sustainability. Nele De Belie is a Professor in the Durability of Cement Bound Materials at Ghent University in Belgium. Since 2020 she has been Director of the Magnel-Vandepitte Laboratory for Structural Engineering and Building Materials. She is furthermore head of the “Concrete and Environment” research group which consists of about 20 postdoctoral and Ph.D. researchers. Her research interests include sustainable concrete with supplementary cementitious materials; degradation by acids and salts;concrete/stone-microorganism interactions (biodeterioration, bioconsolidation); smart concrete with self-healing or self-cleaning properties; and the circular economy and life cycle assessment. She has supervised more than 50 (inter)national projects in these areas. She is currently vice chair of COST CA15202 SARCOS and coordinator of the European Marie Curie ITN SMARTINCS. She is chair of the Technical Activities Committee of RILEM and of TC 281-CCC on Carbonation of concrete with supplementary cementitious materials. Kim Van Tittelboom has been a professor in the field of Sustainable Structures at Ghent University, Belgium since 2016. In her research she focusses on sustainable structural engineering through self-healing of cracks in concrete, prevention of reinforcement corrosion and 3D printing of cementitious materials. Her research group consists of about 10 postdoctoral and Ph.D. researchers. She has supervised almost 10 (inter)national projects in these areas. She is currently MC substitute of COST CA15202 SARCOS and both recruitment coordinator and trustee of the European Marie Curie ITN SMARTINCS. Kim Van Tittelboom is (co-)author of 57 A1 journal publications, more than 70 articles published in proceedings of international conferences, 7 book chapters and she is co-editor of 4 books. Andres Saez Perez has been a Full Professor in the Department of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis at the University of Seville (Spain) since 2007. He received his B. Eng. degree from the School of Engineering at the University of Seville in 1992, his M Sc degree from the Civil Engineering Department at Northwestern University (USA) in 1994, and his Ph. D. degree from the University of Seville in 1997.
