Cabling is a vital element not only in non-satellite communications, but in mobiles as well. Basically without a transmission medium there can be no networks. This text provides: an overview of use of fibre optics in transmission cables techniques for "real-world" transmission cabling; full theoretical coverage of cabling science; a technical account of the properties of copper and metal fibres; and a detailed account of cable development. It constitutues an encyclopedia on cable history, design and development. This book deals specifically with the design, manufacturing, installation and operational aspects. Where pure theory is used, for example in the account of transmission parameters it is dealt with fully and straight-forwardly. On the applications side the chapter on installation includes not only practical coverage of cable jointing and suspension, but also material about protecting cable from termites and rodents.
