This monograph has been designed for the engineer, scientist, ecologist or student who, although not a specialist in fluid mechanics, wishes to understand the fluid mechanics of mixing, and requires simple, predictive techniques for the analysis of important river problems, such as waste discharge.
The main objective of this study is to help the reader make quantitative predictions of the rates of mixing tracers in rivers. Such predictions are needed in a variety of situations including the preliminary design of outfalls, the impact assessment of discharges, water resource planning, and research on biological processes in rivers. A secondary objective is to describe the theoretical basis for commonly-used mixing models so that the reader understands the mixing equations being used and chooses the correct mixing model for any given problems.
