In the 1940s military and civil aircraft were relatively simple and uncomplicated, as were their avionics systems. The intervening period and the last decade, in particular, have witnessed a tremendous growth in the capability and performance of aircraft designs which includes significant nonlinear features in their aerodynamic and propulsion characteristics.
