The papers presented at the conference provide evidence that computer-based models, and in particular numerical methods, are being increasingly used for the solution of the many problems associated with biomedical engineering.
This work comprises the proceedings of the second international symposium on "Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering" held at Swansea, Wales, during 21-24 September 1994. The symposium concentrated on the rapid progress and advances being made in computer modelling applied to the study of biomechanics and biomedical engineering. The papers presented at the conference provide evidence that computer-based models, and in particular numerical methods, are being increasingly used to the solution of the many problems associated with biomedical engineering. The range of subject areas presented include modelling of the hip and knee joint replacements, non-linear analysis of hard and soft tissue, methods for the simulation of bone adaptation, bone reconstruction using implants, and computational techniques to model human impact. Also included are papers investigating the application of numerical techniques to orthodontic treatment and dental mechanics, and new methods for the assessment of fatigue damage in cermented hip prostheses.

Experimental and numerical preclinical evaluation relating to total hip artroplasty; a principal stress-based approach to the simulation of anisotropic bone adaptation to mechanical loading; an experimental study of lumbar destabilization - stabilization theory and bone density; nonlinear viscoelasticity of the Acl - experiments and theory.
