This volume presents a critical commentary on the turbulent history of the South Wales coalfield in the first half of the 20th century. It includes a review of the main themes in the coalfield's written history, and a brief narrative overview of the main trends and events in the period.

This new volume in the very successful Past in Perspective series, examines the impact of the South Wales Coalfields, not just on a local level but at a national level. Particularly the way it left a long lasting legacy upon the national Labour movement. This accessible yet critical study sheds new light on that history of industrial and political conflict, but at the same time sets that history within the wider context of society as a whole.
